Venturing into banksy items, by JW on Aug 17, 2021 23:16:12 GMT 1, Yeah... "At least 100,000 were printed". So you've quoted a site that can actually divide 1,000,000 by 10.
Is your definition of "in circulation" the total number that were printed, regardless of how many ended up ripped in half and stapled to COAs or stored away in boxes (excluding the ones Laz owns)?

Venturing into banksy items, by eponte on Aug 18, 2021 2:38:54 GMT 1, Thank you all. This turned out a nice little thread, thanks for the info. I am def gunning for the mat,and just can't get my head around the uk tenner situation.. I am not that sure, it's a considerable amount of money to put into something that even with some type of letter no one can tell if it is legit or limited/from a series or from banksy himself...does banksy's office validate these if I were to purchase and inquire? No only these below www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2020/banksy-online/banksy-di-faced-tenners
Wow!

Thanks for showing me this irl1. At this point in time I can't see myself putting close to usd2k into an uk tenner without some type of banksy provenance like the signature or part of a series..shame its not an official series, it seems it's very popular enough for there to be a counterfeit market for it from what I am seeing, I wonder what would have sold more, the tenners or the mats?

Way more tenners out there than mats. Best bet buy a Peckham Rock for a few hundred and frame it

Is your definition of "in circulation" the total number that were printed, regardless of how many ended up ripped in half and stapled to COAs or stored away in boxes (excluding the ones Laz owns)? Several sites talk about 1 million printed and there being at least 100,000 in circulation. Doesn't make it fact but it seems to be the best or some of the best info we have about the number of tenners circulated.
I've read that banksy dropped suitcases at NH Carnival, Reading Festival and Liverpool St then another suitcase release at Santas Ghetto. Were multiple suitcases used and fully emptied?
From Google, approx 74,700 dollar bills fit into a medium-sized suitcase (11 x 18 x 26 inches). If banksy emptied just one full medium-sized suitcase, the 100k GBP doesn't seem ridiculous?

Venturing into banksy items, by jarw on Aug 18, 2021 15:52:14 GMT 1, If you take the Laz letter from buying from him and then go out and get a fake tenner and then sell the fake Tenner with the letter then you do not still have the letter of authentification with the real tenner...nooone would want a real tenner with no letter of auth......i hear ya there isn't a perfect system for the Tenners as they aren't Pest Control but at the end of the day if you buy from Laz and have the tenner and letter you are good to go...it's the best case scenerio for these

Venturing into banksy items, by nugget on Aug 18, 2021 16:18:02 GMT 1, I cant help but be sceptical with regards the Laz tenners.
At that time, he was in the loop and would know exactly how they were printed and by who etc.
It would not be beyond possibility that he could get a load of them re-printed and share the profit with the printer.
Same goes for the Posters... stickers... etc
God knows.

Venturing into banksy items, by rockbeer on Aug 23, 2021 7:24:17 GMT 1, The thing to remember about so-called authentication is that to be meaningful or trustworthy it has to be either at least as difficult to fake as the art it supposedly authenticates or be traceable unambiguously to a trustworthy authenticating authority that can validate it - preferably both.
Lazโs tenner authentication letters fail on both counts.
Not only is a Laz letter not associated with any particular tenner, but Laz has no authority to authenticate Banksyโs work and will not verify or validate his authentications. You canโt go to Laz with a tenner you bought and get him to verify it was one he issued, because he has no way of doing that.
People often seem to put far too much faith in unreliable authentication and forget that usually the art itself is its own best provenance.
