Thierry Noir canvas restretch advice , by lukeylupin on Aug 22, 2021 16:26:58 GMT 1, Hi,
I got this Noir canvas off ebay. Pretty pleased with it. However, it was painted in '95 and it's gone a bit slack over the frame now. Also it's got a dimple in the top right corner. I reckon someone may have had something rested against it for a long time. Has anyone got any recommendations on how to best deal with these issues? It's got canvas keys on the back but I'm not really sure how to use these. I was thinking of just taking it to a framer who can perhaps do a restretch to maybe sort the issues..
Thanks

Thierry Noir canvas restretch advice , by eD on Aug 23, 2021 18:11:47 GMT 1, If you wanted a quick cheap fix you can try using canvass keys - they are just small wooden wedges that you slot into the frame work to get rid of the slack - google 'Canvass Keys' probably only cost a few quid.
Cheers

Cheers I think those bits of wood already stuck in the back might be canvas keys. I did watch a video of someone taking a hammer to something similar! Although I'm not sure I'm brave enough to take a hammer to the back of my Noir head

Thierry Noir canvas restretch advice , by chichi carter on Aug 23, 2021 22:15:26 GMT 1, I had a similar issue with a canvas once. Using a spray bottle, I misted a small amount of water (I squeezed the handle of the spray bottle once, that's it) at the back of the canvas in the problematic area. Upon drying the canvas tightened up, no need for a restretch. If you have a go at it you might want to keep a dry cloth handy to absorb any excess spray and spread it evenly on the area. You might also want to test your spray bottle outside or in the sink first to make sure what is coming out is a very fine mist (of water) and not a squirt (of household cleaning product)!
