Paintings of his signature big-eyed characters and a collaborative installation.
Acclaimed Spanish artist Javier Calleja will launch his first solo exhibition this year at Galerie Zink in Waldkirchen, Germany. Entitled “Clouds through the window,” the forthcoming presentation will spotlight new original artworks that were directly inspired by the exhibition space and the surrounding natural environment. Across the works, the artist paints his signature big-eyed characters set against muted backdrops with reoccurring cloud motifs that inspired the title of the show.
Moreover, Calleja teamed up with carver and artisan Malaga Manuel Molina to create the wooden frames of the paintings that span 15 canvases alongside two drawings with varying measurements. There will also be a collaborative installation that pays homage to the Wonder Rooms or Cabinets of Curiosities that were prevalent throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
“The combination of the artworks in cabinet mode, the frames and the very design of the room invite to make an impact on the spectator, a resource that Calleja usually pursues in order to involve an exchange with the public the symbology of his work,” said the gallery in a statement.

I took a 7 hour flight from New York - than a 4 hour train ride throughout the German countryside - and than had to walk from the train station to the hotel as the city is closed down for a festival and there is no car access today. Its been a crazy 24 hours but I feel this guys work is that special and I really wanted to see it in person.

Javier Calleja and Galerie Zink presents a limited edition 3 new limited-edition screenprints that Zink Galerie is releasing on June 13th in an edition of 70 examples of each image.
Javier Calleja, together with the Galerie Zink, launches a limited edition of 3 drawings on June 13th.
Each of these images has 70 copies with a size of 94 × 66.5 cm realized in silk screen printed in Fabriano paper. In the three drawings of this limited edition, we find Calleja's iconic characters as well as their representative and eloquent phrases. In the composition of the different drawings that make up this edition, we recognize many of them in attitudes and situations that are partly reminiscent of some of the works that have formed part of their previous exhibitions.
Calleja, who has been involved at all times in every detail of the printing process, signs this edition taking advantage of the opening of Clouds through the window, the current exhibition that can be visited at the Galerie Zink until July 21st in which the artist has recreated his own Chamber of Wonders.
