Phillips Art Auctions, by Deleted on May 31, 2024 19:23:56 GMT 1, This would have made a really nice print. It might not scream Banksy like earlier iconic works but it's an image that will have appealed aesthetically to the majority. Hard to imagine someone not liking it.

The print market especially signed will recover But thanks for your insightful commentary. I have to agree. A unsigned GWB went for close to £100k earlier this week. Recovery to the heights of a few years back is on its way.
The one caveat I would add is his deafening inactivity and the reason.

A unsigned GWB went for close to £100k earlier this week. Recovery to the heights of a few years back is on its way. The one caveat I would add is his deafening inactivity and the reason. I'd love to agree but I think it might be a bit premature. The leopard was an exceptionally viable commercial image, real quality, completely unique, large scale with great provenance re Walled Off. 1 owner, never been openly/publicly available. It had a very good chance of buyers going head to head in a public sale. For me, I see the originals and prints market as separate now, not really influencing each other in the way they did in the past. I don't think the sale of a quality original like this will have any great influence over general originals or prints. It does show that there's solid belief in the artists market long term, it's no small sum and multiple interested parties willing to spend well over 3 mill. Print prices are only really starting to make sense again now, 2/3 years ago they made no sense. For me, I've seen the last couple years correction as the recovery, back to a healthier, more sustainable market. There's a bit of rejigging to do on prices for everything to fall back into its natural pecking order image/price wise. They could drop a bit more, who knows, but if you're in it long term the main risk has passed so it shouldn't matter too much either way.
I can't see any great boost overall until PC are functioning well but that's up to the artist. They need extra staff to help them cope. Who knows, maybe the staff situation is being dealt with as we speak and will just take time. Anyways, I'm bored of listening to myself now re PC, it's up to the artist whether or not to help his staff.
It is a great piece and a very strong sale. Lucky buyer!

Considering all what's happening in Israel and Gaza at the moment, Bansky's total lack of activity is somewhat troubling. Is he ill perhaps, or too depressed to make art at the moment? I can't believe that Banksy is simply not interested.

I would say Banksy has done more to raise awareness of the plight of the Palestinian people for the past 20 years than any politician or others supposedly responsible for keeping International peace within the region. I would guess that the silence comes from a very deep place of respect and love for all those tens of thousands of innocent people that have lost their lives and the ongoing suffering of war within the region. It is incredibly humbling and demonstrates a level of intelligence and sensitivity rarely exhibited. Sometimes silence speaks louder than words...or pictures.

If ever Palestinians needed Banksy's voice, then it is now. If anything, all he did was playing down the conflict with tacky unintelligent art (some of which offended Palestinians) . He was painting with IDF protection and yet playing it as illegal hits. That only made people think that it's less dangerous there than it actually is. His silence is disgusting.

The use of superlatives when it comes to Banksy's silence seems somewhat excessive. Yes, his commitment to creating awareness for the Palestinian cause is certainly admirable. But that it is “incredibly humble and demonstrates a level of intelligence and sensitivity rarely exhibited” is over the top 😂 We’re talking banksy, an artist who has made his mark in the field of street art, yet just another human being who shits on a loo and pisses in the bushes

Intelligence has never been something people could accuse you of 🍷
