Damien Hirst H10 โข The Empresses, by storm breaker on Mar 23, 2022 23:22:31 GMT 1, Do you mean to say "I have an Empresses for sale for anyone that'll pay cost?" No this is not what I mean to say and also not what I have said. - Everybody on here who wanted one got one. Nobody will buy at cost when they're available for 1k less. Besides, flipping a timed edition artwork is somewhat nonsensical.ย What's the problem if a rich dude spends some money on a Hirst and saves me some? If i'd sell it, I'd instantly get another one.ย I don't care what you think, but **** you very much for your hostility and distrust.ย
To be fair it is pretty much what you've said.

Damien Hirst H10 โข The Empresses, by klyde on Mar 24, 2022 6:51:01 GMT 1, Mine's scheduled to be delivered on Friday, and I'm really looking forward to seeing/ hanging it! - But I have to say: the fact that I could how buy one for 1k less hurts. So here's the question: any ideas on how these could perform in a regular auction house (outside of the UK, central Europe). Surely, many who buy there will not follow the "NFT market" and therefore maybe not know that these can be acquired cheaper? [not looking to make a profit, but maybe get the 3500.- back?]
It only hurts because you're actively looking at prices of NFTs. Just ignore it.
Enjoy your delivery day! Hopefully I'm not far behind but no email yet.

And donโt forget VAT was included on the physical but hasnโt been paid on the NFT yet

I opened the huge cardboard box in the evening in a relatively dimly lit room and you could clearly see the butterfly wings, framed by a glitter texture that looked like fiery embers - pretty awesome!

Damien Hirst H10 โข The Empresses, by Londown 01 on Mar 25, 2022 11:02:46 GMT 1, Here are the thoughts and impressions on day #2.
I went for the Theodora also: I liked how it does not present a clear geometric figure but leaves a lot to the imagination, open for interpretation and reinterpretation.
Packaging great, safe arrival. Got notified by DHL on Wednesday, was scheduled for Friday and surprisingly arrived on Thursday. I'd say London -> EU within 1 day is a pretty good delivery.
Had to pay roughly 400.- Euro taxes/ fees, so the total cost was about 3500.- Euro.
GLITTER There is a small layer on the print which is exposed. Only upon touch does some glitter come off, but it seems well executed, and I don't think it is an issue in the future. I don't know how it will collect dust - might be a problem when unframed?! Concerning its aesthetics: I'm not a friend of glitter, and don't own anything that has glitter (until now). However, with this one it looks fantastic. With the Theodora, I'd say its about 1/4 glitter, 3/4 print - so by no means is it too much or too shiny.
OVERALL APPEARANCE It's just great. The butterflies are rather naturalistic, which contrasts sharply with the glitter - and this is brilliant. Butterflies alone would be rather dull I suppose, but the addition of the glitter really makes it vivid and exciting. Additionally, since the glitter is constantly sparkling, and because the layer is on top of the other, there is an exciting depth to the work. The combination of the ethereal butterfly wings with the shiny glitter give this print an almost metaphysical quality. [sorry, this is the art historian speaking]
Due to it's size and colors the print is both heavy and dominant; Due to its surface, reflection is also an issue that needs to be considered (though its not too bad). Therefore, framing is definitely an option - and finding the right space in the house/ flat is also a bit challenging.
Those who bought it because they liked it will surely love it. Those who bought to flip ... well: who cares. [Don't know much about the art market, but I think that once this NFT madness is over and people see how gorgeous they are, prices will surely stabilize.]

Damien Hirst H10 โข The Empresses, by klyde on Mar 25, 2022 12:18:25 GMT 1, Will discuss with my usual framer but I think I'll go with the non reflective museum glass. I have used in the past with a black and white Micallef which looks great, but im not sure how it would react with the glitter on this one. Could dull it all down. Frame itself will just be a no nonsense black blox type. Nothing too exciting.

Damien Hirst H10 โข The Empresses, by vernaxley on Mar 25, 2022 13:38:48 GMT 1, Mine's scheduled to be delivered on Friday, and I'm really looking forward to seeing/ hanging it! [not looking to make a profit, but maybe get the 3500.- back?] There's a reason why limited editions exist. They create a scarcity which pushes value.
Timed releases, like The Empress, do the exact opposite. Nearly 3,000 of these were produced. That's ridiculously high for an artwork, whether physical or NFT.
I can't see these ever performing well on the secondary market.
On the upside, the artist has made the money, not the speculators.

The fact that thousands of other people own something, particularly in the art world, is actually a turn off.

Not one is hanging on a wall yet.
Crazy amount of knee jerk speculation based on this NFT nonsense experiment.
Lets see where were at in 5 plus years when its all over with and all of these are on collectors walls all over the world.

Those who bought to flip ... well: who cares. [Don't know much about the art market, but I think that once this NFT madness is over and people see how gorgeous they are, prices will surely stabilize.] Excellent Summary, I would say that framing under glass is an essential for this piece, as the glitter sits on top of the artwork and is liable to attract dust/fluff etc and not easily cleaned, I also own a DH Palais Des Pape which also has a layer of diamond dust and is framed under glass for this very reason.

Damien Hirst H10 โข The Empresses, by Londown 01 on Mar 26, 2022 12:29:02 GMT 1, day #3 update
Reflections are definitely there - I think its subjective whether one thinks they're too much. I'm quite sensitive to that but I thought its ok. Had it on the wall since yesterday, unframed of course: thinking of taking it down and get if framed first. I'm afraid it'll collect dust quickly; wife says I shouldn't worry too much ... don't know which way to go.
Something that will be interesting to many: apart from framing, lighting will be an issue. Yesterday later in the day when it got darker I saw it for the first time with artificial light (just a regular lamp): the glitter was much more dominant, giving the whole print a completely different look and feel. I thought this was an interesting and exciting, but like I said needs to be considered.

Damien Hirst H10 โข The Empresses, by Pawel on Mar 26, 2022 19:42:11 GMT 1, How can anyone say that doesnโt look good. A signed Hirst of that size, that looks like that, for $2500โฆno brainer Iโll try. Itโs too red and the glitter looks a bit โฆ letโs say it doesnโt add much to the print (at least from the pics). I'm sure some open edition will the available some time in the future without all this red and glitter. Probably a bit more expensive but itโd rather pay a bit extra for something else.

Damien Hirst H10 โข The Empresses, by Londown 01 on Mar 26, 2022 19:48:28 GMT 1, Surely opinions on these will be divided!
Only have to say: I haven't seen one picture that does the prints justice. I've tried taking photos myself and not one of them came out good. But: the glitter does add a lot! It is really essential, but this can only be understood once one has seen them in person. (sure those that saw them at Heni in London or have already received theirs can confirm).

I have a couple of the other Hirsts, a blue one and a brown edition, plus the rainbow, hearts etc
When i saw the empresses at the gallery, they had the set of blue in another room
The Empresses look the same as the blue until you get some direct light on them, then they really come into their own
I really liked them, looked great, had to buy them
Some will hate, others will meh, others will like, its art.
value wise? who knows?
Would it have been easier and cheaper to produce without the glitter? Sure
Does the glitter add or detract? To me it makes it, to others ........

Absolutely agree, I saw them in person at the Heni gallery, and not one pic online does them justice, they are just incredible in person, the real wow factor!! the glitter really makes them pop, and does not look tacky in any way, in the same way the diamond dust on my DH Palais des Pape doesn't look tacky!
