Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Wearology on Jan 23, 2015 13:18:03 GMT 1, I have some very sad news to report from the streets of New York City. One of the last old Banksy street pieces has been painted over yesterday on 1/22/15. This image of a rat sweeping has been on the base of a light pole in Midtown Manhattan for many years. It always made me smile on my walk to work. I want to thank the great people of New York for allowing it to remain there for so many years and not easily sawing it off and putting on your wall or selling it to the highest bidder. I assume that 99.9% of the people walking by it each day had no idea it was there and definitely the person that painted over the street pole just assumed it was just another piece of graffiti. Rest In Peace "Mr. Rat Sweeper"

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by dreadnatty on Jan 23, 2015 22:19:31 GMT 1, GRAFFITI WRITER ZEXOR DECLARES WAR ON GENTRIFICATION, STREET ARTISTS, AND THE BUSHWICK COLLECTIVE
m.animalnewyork.com/2015/graffiti-writer-zexor-declares-war-street-artists-bushwick-collective/
ZEXOR, a graffiti writer born and bred in Brooklyn, has been on a rampage lately, defacing (or beautifying, depending on who you talk to) one mural after another with spray paint. His target? The Bushwick Collective, an ongoing street art project that facilitates the painting of scores of walls by urban artists.
The Collective was founded in 2011 by lifelong Bushwick resident Joe Ficalora as a way to combat area graffiti, which he sees an eyesore. Billing himself as a โaccidental curatorโ in published interviews, Ficalora has convinced dozens of property owners to let artists of his choosing paint their walls or rolldown gates. This roster of artists is constantly growing as the walls are painted on a rotating basis. Not surprisingly, heโs not too keen on giving graffiti writers walls to paint. Although he has made some exceptions, he even has a rule against painting letters or murals that look too much like graffiti. He also doesnโt allow murals that he deems too offensive or political.
In the past two weeks, ZEXOR has managed to tag virtually every Bushwick Collective mural with his name or smiley faces, disrupting countless walls painted by the likes of VERS, Jerkface, Herb Smith, Danielle Mastrion, Lmnopi (pictured above), Lady Aiko, Bishop, URNewYork, SeeOne, Nychos, Sexer, Dasic Fernandez and ColWalnuts, among others. Even after the artists restored their pieces, he returned a second and third time. ANIMAL reached out to Ficalora about ZEXORโs graffiti binge, but he only had two words: โNo comment.โ Meanwhile on Instagram, many of the street artists whose work has been ragged in the past week or so are using the social media platform to air the grievances, mostly to the delight of ZEXOR, who sees these artists and the Bushwick Collective itself, as forces of gentrification.
โThe Bushwick Collective doesnโt help either when the director himself is all about gentrification,โ wrote ZEXOR in response to a critic on Instagram. โHe brings in these artist [sic] from all around the world to Bushwick and ultimately many people like it and what was consideredโฆthe poorest neighborhood in all of NYC is nowโฆthe most expensive to live in. So donโt tell me about my hood and who has done what you know nothing. Youโre the outsider we want out.โ

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Deleted on Jan 23, 2015 22:35:31 GMT 1, I was a pretty early fan of the Bushwick 5 Points
Joe was super nice in the beginning, he had a moment and a story for everyone, but a couple years later I felt he got caught up in the hype and no longer had time for his not so famous friends.
Trying to find that place in 2012 was funny as it was literally nowhere. Maybe one restaurant and it was cash only lol. Quite a bit different today. Though still no decent food on the weekends if you visit. My wife calls it Brunchwick...

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by dreadnatty on Jan 24, 2015 0:31:20 GMT 1, You can totally go for dinner nowadays @streetfart . The 'hood is getting quite a bit 'nicer' as people from Williamsburg/Greenpoint are being priced out and moving there(and Ridgewood too). Its much like Williamsburg of 8-10 years ago. More restaurants/galleries/clothing places opening up etc.

But I would have imagined a huge and comprehensive survey along the lines of the Juxtapose 20-year group show last year and the Wooster Collective 10-year retrospective from 2013. Also the poster release should have being in conjunction with originals instead of it being the the show itself. So I'm actually a bit disappointed that it's not the extravaganza they could've had.

Speaking of flow, Lala's work moves...the pieces really have a life of their own! Glad to hear there are other as excited. I think she's going to knock the socks off some people with this show, we shall see. Peace bruv.
I am most excited for Lala Abaddon at the moment. Showing at a new gallery in Manhattan (Castor). 2/26 I believe. Same, love her work. Always great to stare at for strange amounts of time. Oh and some dick tagged over the Borf on Castor Gallery's storefront. Real shame. "Bunch of savages in this town." The graf kids def don't make it easy for anyone. A wall's a wall but the storefront is a low blow for sure. Ebb and flow. Speaking of flow, Lala's work moves...the pieces really have a life of their own! Glad to hear there are other as excited. I was looking at her pieces at that Braddock Tiles show a while back where they released the second Swoon print, and was more or less staring at them for 10-20 minutes.
