Tracey Emin - Self Portrait Prints, Counter Editions, by ignition0 on Apr 19, 2022 20:59:56 GMT 1, Will be interesting to see if sales of these pick up once the Margate exhibition opens which is showing them. Do you perceive they are selling slowly?
Hard to say. The last self-portraits sold out quite quickly but were £3500 at launch excluding discount. £7.5k plus is a prohibitive amount of money for lots of people so I guess these inevitably will take longer to sell through.

Half the run of each print has been sold as part of a full set. With only these three releases today they have comfortably exceeded their targets for the entire run.

Tracey Emin - Self Portrait Prints, Counter Editions, by Happy Shopper on Apr 20, 2022 10:39:11 GMT 1, selling well two prints now £12k How can you claim they are selling well when, over 24 hours later, they are still readily available? I would call that selling really badly. The pieces I have tried to buy recently have sold out in less than ten seconds. They've sold enough to reach Tier 3, so that's good. Now, I expect, most potential buyers are waiting for the next set at Tier 1, before these first ones will sell out.

At the risk of being slightly pedantic. I think we are getting two different descriptors mixed up. ‘Sold out’ would indicate they sold well and are no longer available. ‘Selling well’ would indicate they are selling well. If the only indicator of something ‘selling well’ is that it is sold out then these are not selling well. If ‘selling well’ can be taken to involve selling 25 full sets of 10 prints each (this alone worth over £1.5 million exclusive of any taxes) plus the remaining release exceeding all targets after only three of the ten have been offered for sale then I think it can be reasonably described as ‘selling well’.
Just my 10 cents.

Tracey Emin - Self Portrait Prints, Counter Editions, by Deleted on Apr 20, 2022 15:46:34 GMT 1, They've sold enough to reach Tier 3, so that's good. Now, I expect, most potential buyers are waiting for the next set at Tier 1, before these first ones will sell out. I wonder how many they had to sell in order to move from tier 2 to tier 3. My guess is about 4 or 5 prints max. I still think it's reasonable to say these are selling quite badly when they are still available even 36 hours after release. For most art prints, if things do not sell out within the first 24 hours then they tend not to be selling as well as expected, especially for an A-list artist like Tracey Emin.
Maybe the tiered pricing is intentionally put there to stop editions selling out immediately?

With 7 more cheaper prints to sell, would you really expect these to sell out straight away? That’s not the way tiered pricing generally works. A lot of Counter Editions prints don’t sellout, if you look through previous releases.

My pick is Crying – Shouting – Screaming – Was Not going to help me Live and I'm a bit surprised it hasn't gone even higher in price. I guess there are 500 in total so not really a small edition.

What would you consider to be her best?
It’s all about opinions and these threads tend to actually mean something if people elaborate on their opinions.
This place has really died a death in terms any art discussion. People only get excited by how much they can flip something for.

Tracey Emin - Self Portrait Prints, Counter Editions, by Love Is In The Air on Apr 24, 2022 9:07:02 GMT 1, I haven't been yet Dungle so I hope you are right and it is up there with her best work. For me that would include her powerful large scale blankets and neons, and even the large scale paintings in bright reds I thought worked so well hung up against the Munchs in the Royal Academy fairly recently.
These new works in Margate seems to be primarily in black so look quite morbid on first glance of the photos of the show which I think explains some of the reaction, but at the the same time I think most Emin fans are just delighted to see her painting again. I will reserve judgement until I have been to the show and am excited to see them and what she does next.
As an aside I thought her last big show at White Cube in around 2019 was strong too and was very emotive about the loss of her mother. And although it is like choosing a Greatest Hits album as a best, I have happy memories of viewing her retrospective at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art on a sunny weekend in Edinburgh a few years back now which obviously showed off a lot of her great works from over the years.
I'm hoping to get down to Margate in the next week or so but look forward to hearing what others think.

Completely agree in terms of art discussion , Dungle.
It’s become so binary… ‘I don’t like it so it must be shit and I’ll ridicule anyone who likes it’. It’s very odd and smacks to me of a deep seated insecurity.
I’ve seen the prints in the flesh - unframed and presented together. I found the scale, range, intimacy and, of course, the subject matter right up there with anything I’ve seen by the artist. Unlike Love Is In The Air (above) I didn’t particularly enjoy the works I saw in the Mumch/Emin show - I found them rather ‘obvious’ and ‘grand guignol’. With these works, using a ‘sad’ blue, she has (for me) achieved a melancholy that I’ve rarely seen in her work. A true glimpse into her soul, if you like.
I very much look forward to seeing the full show now that it has opened. And it’s good to be discussing the work of a leading artist rather than staring at snide comments and wondering why folk bother.
Looking forward to an ice cream In Margate

Completely agree LIITA. Some of my most enjoyable afternoons have been spent discussing the merits or otherwise of work whilst stood before a piece with someone who doesn’t see it in the same light that I do.

As for these prints they're great but not her best work let's get real.
Agreed this forum is pretty much useless these days unless like me, you get immense pleasure reading posts by people talking up the latest print they purchased in the hope of flipping it.

That's what's going on here and it fools no one Tracey's Bed and the tent, Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995 will be her defining legacy, really did change the course of contemporary art and alongside the other YBA's really opened the doors for thousands and thousands of others to consider art school and being an artist as a viable career/life/study option, for Emin to do it with raw autobiographical work was unheard of at the time. Sadly it was short lived, the Tories killing access to Uni with increased fees and now no one but the affluent middle class can afford to take similar risks and their biographies are simply not as interesting. Banksy's rise and rise could be considered as a logical response to this lack of access with many taking to the streets to find (and create) value outside the institution. Always thought their was a linear logic between the YBA's and Bansky long before their first collab.
