Yes, the price probably should have been lower ($300 would have been fair and more accessible for fans on a budget).
But one thing you can't deny is the massive demand for his work. I'm surprised people thought this would sit (or perhaps they were purposely misleading others so it was an easy buy for them).
Invader has huge mass appeal. I would say he is only second to Banksy (perhaps Obey) to being named by the general public as a street artist.
His style is easily identifiable. He has history. He was a main character in 'Exit through the gift shop. He has a huge body of street work. He has auction history. His work is getting more and more expensive and inaccessible for new fans. So is this release really so terrible?
He gets paid, fans get a piece by one of their favourite artists.
If this was a Banksy release, you would all be falling over yourselves to hand your money over and than claim they're now worth £50k.
As long as he doesn't keep doing these regular releases (which is no guarantee). long term, these will do well.
They're fun, easily displayed, require no framing, and are different to all his other releases.
You just have to look at pics of the recent MIMA exhibition to see his fan base is large and diverse; kids, women, elderly all enjoying the work. The number of his fans will only increase.
We should applaud an artist for actually making work accessible.
And don't hate him for being successful, he was grinding and getting arrested for years and years before he became successful. He paid his dues.

There will be so many that fall into this category that they will inevitably have to compete with each other on ebay, at least in the very short term. |

Put it this way: I don't think anyone will be "stuck" with these, in fact I'm sure there will always be an appetite for this release at least at cost so no one really loses, if it's a huge profit you're after then other investments are potentially a safer bet.

Back to the Invader vinyl. No matter how many variations of this one, no matter how many other designs will be made in the future, yesterday's piece will be FOREVER the first one ever issued. Even with a 5k edition, this will be the grail of the next generation of 3D collectors (at least those who can't afford a Rubik at Sotheby's).
That said, I don't care if I'm wrong, I plan to keep mine and anyway it was cheaper than my recent Elephant ceramic from David Shringley. (btw if you want to see it, you're welcome :-) @jacquesolivierholzer

I've got one of the first edition and wouldn't sell anywhere near cost.EDIT:- just checked ebay. £900 - £4000. Hardly cost price |
