Kaws • The Promise, by Pete the Post on Nov 20, 2022 10:00:42 GMT 1, Gutted, loved the image at first sight, the message is the most important we need to listen too, Then it turns out its part of the Qatar reputation laundering, fthat, im out.
Great message with the piece, but why why why would you take a moral stance thats so important, and release it in a morally bankrupt, abusive bloody oil state like Qatar!! Message is lost for the sake of the publicity here.
Its not a statement anymore, is an oxymoron.
NOT well played by kaws if you ask me. (i know, you didnt.)

Another way to look at it, is that hopefully the Kaws statue in Qatar will be a permanent reminder that Qatar should make some change in the way they think about the future of our planet.
Completely agree that Qatar has major problems, but just pointing moral fingers at them will not make the country improve.
I’m hoping that by hosting the World Cup with 31 other nationalities, Qatar might realise they should improve and become more aligned to the rest of the world, so some good might eventually come out of it (even if it is a little bit).

I would like to think that was the case also. But it was the reality of the situation that led me to post what i did.
Edit, while im started, i may as well carry on (and caveat this with i do really like his pieces and am looking to add one, would have been this one, but not now sadly. So wanting a piece is a tad hypocritical here. ). Kaws basically makes a chunk of his money selling these vinyl pieces, Which are a composition of fossil fuels, and also will break down and add to the ever growing micro plastic issue we have. It just makes the concept a little contradictory when you break it down. (If by some chance they turn out to be biodegradable ill eat my words!)

Kaws • The Promise, by Criminal Mischief on Nov 20, 2022 17:15:43 GMT 1, It's quite ironic. When the only other news I saw coming out of Qatar was about media censorship and the beer ban at the stadium, this piece almost reads as a KAWS parody.

I like it. And yes I am fully aware of the irony behind it's placement etc. Maybe that's part of the art

Well, sadly in this case, the finger is being pointed at people who have just got involved not in change but in acceptance. Which is what WC in Qatar is all about for Qatar, being seen as "accepted" by the global community regardless of their actions.
We just sink deeper and deeper as we ignore and appease there actions.

Kaws • The Promise, by RoboJ on Nov 22, 2022 18:51:48 GMT 1, I guess it depends how you want to view it.
Perhaps another view point is that without the WC would LGBTQ+ issues have ever been raised. We talk about oil as though it’s their problem, not the fact that we’ve not only consumed it, but we’ve reaped the benefits of decades of consuming the worlds natural resources. Now we want to tell everyone else it’s bad and shouldn’t be doing it.
I believe working together is the best way to help both others AND ourselves. Nobody changes on their own.

Ah, while it is true that people need help to change in pretty much all cases. Im just going to counter that with the well known reality of "you cant change someone that doesnt want to change themselves". Which is being happily played out in real time for us, as Qatar retracted the beer deal and are also turning people away for wearing rainbow clothes.
Correct, we did spent years ruining the planet by using fossil fuels, but we know better now, and some are aiming to make changes, Qatar is not one of them, they will fight for the right to poison us all as long as they can. Times have changed, your taking past norms and placing them into a modern setting that is much better informed of the dangers. You could say thats "fair", but it really isnt the right thing to do at this point.
LGBT issues are bering discussed globally maybe, but nothjing is going to change in Qatar, as they are actively stopping the debate and as i said, turning people away in rainbow clothing. Even our brave players have ditched their armbands in fear of a yellow card!!! While the Iranian team risk god knows what, to have the actual balls to stand up. So thats a bit of a mixed bag. It is being discussed, but not where it matters, more in countries where we are all pretty much accepting already. So its a bit of an echo chambered conversation.
