Limited Edition Art, by Daniel Silk on Nov 22, 2022 10:47:29 GMT 1, I think this could become an interesting discussion. Why do Artists release Prints in Limited Editions?
Having Limited Edition, Limited Supply of the Art creates a resale market with increasing values, perfect for Flippers.
Why do you think most Artist don't do Open Unlimited Editions?

Limited Edition Art, by Daniel Silk on Nov 22, 2022 11:00:38 GMT 1, If an Artist wants to share their work with as many people as possible, and especially if they have important social messages to spread through their Art, wouldn't it make more sense to release most if not all of their releases in unlimited editions? Unlimited is surely the best way to directly reach the maximum number of people with your images, and complete making fakes unnecessary. The artwork is unlikely to increase in resale value, but why would that be an issue for the Artist? With Art not increasing in value, it would mean only true fans of the image would ever buy it, and the demand created by investors and flippers would disappear. So, Is that the reason why Artists release Limited Editions? To appeal to Investors, Flippers, this only interested in Art that will turn a profit? Would the Artist be afraid that without Investors and Flippers they wouldn't sell enough?
Does it have another angle? Please discuss.

Limited Edition Art, by Daniel Silk on Nov 22, 2022 11:13:51 GMT 1, Question? Would an Artist such as Banksy or Damien Hirst be as famous now if they had started out with all of their Art released in Unlimited Editions? I would think not, I would think much of the hype, demand, media coverage comes from the increasing resale values, such as the Auction results appearing in the news. But does it get to a stage in an artist career that they could change tactics and release future work in Unlimited Editions? Do Artists such as Banksy and Hirst need the value hype to survive? Do they need the network of gallery resellers, auction houses, flippers to keep the ball rolling or can their work stand up for itself?

Wouldnt it make more sense to just put it on the streets for free if that was your goal :-) like you know, invent something called "street art" or something :-)

Limited Edition Art, by avec art on Nov 22, 2022 13:27:55 GMT 1, It makes the print coveted, people want something that others can't or don't have, something rare and more personal. The artist is happy to produce that for people who've taken an interest in their work.
I suppose also like a currency the value of the print can move up and down according to market forces. When there is an unlimited supply this value aspect doesn't function.
Ironically, an unlimited supply could mean the artworks end up in fewer hands.
