Just a question?, by miguel on Jan 19, 2023 1:13:34 GMT 1, Hi all.
Just a question?
Is this art thing let’s call it that a load of cods wallops and a bit of a scam.
Yes human expression.. wouldn’t the world be this or that without it.
But why some artists it’s worth millions and some nowt. Is it a scam ie marketing campaigns or teams etc which it probably is.
Yet we buy in to it.
please discuss?

Just a question?, by User Error on Jan 19, 2023 4:49:19 GMT 1, Crypto currency is a scam. So are financial institutions. Oh and processed foods are too. And politicians. And the metaverse. And cable TV.
You know what's not a scam... meteorites. Those are difficult to come by. Also, art is not a scam. I enjoy what I buy and love that I have one of a kind (or an edition of 100). Price shouldn't matter. Just enjoy it.

It's not (all) a "scam". But, when it comes to selling the art in a commercial transaction, it turns into a business like any other business( ie marketing campaigns/teams etc as you say).
IMO Damien Hirst is an example of a wonderful businessman, who's seemingly infinite ways to repackage dots on canvas and still keep fans buying and ascribing seemingly absurd values to his work is impressive. If he was a nobody, and a "serious-buyer" saw those dots on paper in a thrift store, they'd likely pass by without a second glance. ( maybe "serious-buyers" don't go to thrift stores. I wouldn't know )
On the other hand, I'm a big fan of Shizuko Yoshikawa, and were I not a student of her entire oeuvre, I'd think much of her work was just silly little lines on paper, a la Damien Hirst.
So I guess my contribution to this age old discussion is that it seems to me that what one knows about an artist's past work helps create appreciation and value for the new work.

If art is a scam then so to is crypto, the stock market, bond market, fx market, kids toys market and so on. So long as humans are involved people will look to game a system. There's nothing I can do about it so I just enjoy the ride and try not to worry about things I have no control over. If you're concerned that you may get scammed in any transaction walk away.

Just a question?, by its all about me on Jan 19, 2023 14:03:23 GMT 1, It's only a scam if you get caught up in the hype. Ignore who everybody else is buying at the moment or who you think is trendy or who you think will be worth a shedload of money in the future. Just buy art that you like and want to hang on your walls at home. I get a huge amount of enjoyment from seeing nice art hanging on my walls. At the end of the day, that's all that matters, isn't it?
