ESCIF (ES) for NUART ABERDEEN
Pollution forest
Spanish artist Escif returns to Nuart with one of his tertiary landscapes, using the recently adopted medium of ink made from harvested pollution. With the topic of this year’s festival being Rewilding, Escif’s muted landscape adds another dimension to an otherwise ordinary Aberdonian urban parking lot.
The image chosen by the artist was taken from the Caledonian Forest, an ancient temperate forest in Scotland. The forest has due to human actions over thousands of year reduced in size to its current extent.
By the 1950s, only 1 precent of the original Caledonian Forest, that once covered most of Scotland, remained.
The mural was painted using air.ink, which is the world’s first ink made out of air pollution particulate matters.
By creating a new pictoral forest by using ink created from one of humanities most destructive inputs on the landscape, the choice of material and image reinforces the themes of the work and the festival at large.

John Marchant jokingly describes himself as Jamie Reid’s representative on Earth. A gallerist himself, John manages the archive of one of the 20th Century’s most important visual artists, Jamie Reid. This is the man who defined a generation thanks to his early work with the Sex Pistols.
Now Marchant collaborates with Jamie on projects from land art to street art. One such project at the Nuart Festival in Aberdeen being 1the installation of a paste up wall. It is a collage of some of Jamie Reid’s iconic poster images from over the years.

Caledonia Curry is the artist better known in street art circles as Swoon. Creating a trail of paste ups street art works in Aberdeen. She describes herself as coming out of a street art retirement just for the cities Nuart Festival.
Revisiting a body of work that she has been well known for. The paste ups are nonetheless something that she hasn’t practiced for some time. Block printed, the artworks are packed full of detail and often contain stories within them. It’s been something that Swoon first started in the late 90’s. She was pasting on the street before street art was even a recognisable term.
