Banksy Surf monkey stencil, by Reader on Jul 11, 2024 9:22:20 GMT 1, I remember being offered several works by the same "friend" some years ago, he was actually a friend of a friend and the back story aka provenance are indeed as solid as it comes for works that will never get a COA. If you can imagine a time when Pest Control eventually close down, then all works will revert to this kind of provenance. So in the long term, a great addition to your collection. I recall them being reasonably priced also, but still a little steep for me at the time. Still, a great pick up, good to see someone taking an informed risk. There's little doubt in my mind it's legit.
Did you also get the provenance written down and signed by the seller ?

I took a risk as that’s what it is, but it was after trying to gather as much info as I could on it and the guy selling, Ben Eine also remembered the seller (which confirmed he said who he said he was) when I messaged him, people like Ben who are going through tough times still took the time to reply and that means alot, he didn’t have too.
So in short I don’t think I could’ve done much more in my research, I’m happy for it to go on the wall though 🙌🏼

There are some small bits missing (detail on the backpack for example, it’s very fragile now)
It wasn’t the only thing left with the guy in Brighton, a couple of others and a fire extinguisher (BORING)
He helped with turf war and crude oils and stayed with Banksy at the time in his apartment in Old Street (is that common knowledge? Can someone confirm who’s been following a lot longer than me that he did have an apartment in Old Street?)
The sleeve is heavily spoiled from black paint on both sides, inside so indicates been used a few times.

No evidence in Brighton, only Bristol and London, as far as I’m aware it was never used in Brighton and as per the original post, all the examples differ slightly so there was more than one stencil for this image. I hope you didn't pay much for it! These can be knocked up easily, as has been demonstrated with a raft of other dubious banksy stencils that have been flogged on ebay.

In the future these unique pieces will also be highly sought after
Ask Pest Control if it is a legitimate piece of history and if they issue a certificate if necessary. Possibly tell him that you don't want to sell it, and that you are ready to sign an agreement.
Truly extraordinary piece if it is by Banksy.
I would place it on plexiglass with wood-effect streaks.

I bought it as my due diligence satisfied me enough to give it a high chance it’s genuine and I’m happy to have it on the wall to enjoy 👍🏼

I worked at Cargo from 2001. I saw a number of Banksy's stencils get thrown in the skip, along with his empty cans, gloves, rolls of tape etc.
Now that wouldn't happen, clearly, but this is back in the days when £70 prints sat on POW website and went unsold for weeks on end.
