Banksy Safari in London , by PC Baby on Aug 12, 2024 9:19:39 GMT 1, I still think that the main photo on Banksy's website is incredible: The sunlight into the police box, the CCTV notice, the police officer intent on capturing history - was he even aware that he was being captured himself and therefore part of that historic image? And of course not forgetting the 'piranhas permeating daily life' not only in London!! The execution of the artwork itself is mind-blowing - just imagine having to cut all the stencils to make up this tryptich, which in itself is quite the achievement. And then spraying all the different layers to perfection to arrive at this amazing result of light and shade, murkiness and translucence shows how accomplished an artist Banksy really is - not forgetting that the overall effect is all achieved by applying different pressure to the spray-can nozzles - even more difficult than using a paintbrush, in my opinion. So much skill and workmanship.. One of his best! ๐

Banksy Safari in London , by thisisthesam on Aug 12, 2024 9:55:56 GMT 1, The latest one (the piranha's) looks amazing - the use of environment, detailing of stencilling... Bravo.
It got officially announced a few hours before I was heading back home so tad gutted not to catch it. I'm hoping they maybe protect it / take it down and pop it in one of the national galleries. Be interesting to see what they do with it.
I did catch the monkeys though... The one on the end is cheeky!

Took the dogs along and now they're famous in Sweden ๐

About the execution I believe this is unique through Banksys career. I can't think of any other multi layer on glass or perspex that is sprayed from the inside. Which also affects the normal stencil technique as you have to spray the top layer first.

This took a degree of thought, planning, and practice.
Which implies that even when it looks like he's inactive, he's not just sat at home playing Minecraft, he's doing stuff behind the scenes. Arting.

Banksy Safari in London , by drip on Aug 12, 2024 11:17:22 GMT 1, Banksy's been on the front page of the BBC every day this past week, as well as on the main news.
Whatever anyone's personal thoughts on the man, his work, the technical skills behind these latest stencils, etc, etc, not many other artists can garner the kind of attention that he can. Certainly not street artists.
When folk say, oh, my kid could do that, or worse, whatever it is that JPS is doing, your kid can't do ALL that Banksy does. It's not just a simple stencil of a wolf on a satellite dish, it's the whole package. It's the longevity, it's having major news agencies take your call, having auction houses willing to go along with stunts (allegedly *cough*), it's museum shows, displays, the whole lot. And to have this kind of success, this career WITHOUT merchandising the fuck out your own work, without putting your face out there, without sacrificing your morals, etc.
And one of the world's best known, living (we assume), artists, but he can walk down any high street unmolested. That's quite the thing to pull off.
And, AND, the dude has a literal fucking boat going around saving actual lives.
For what he is and what he does, it's impressive. And I doubt we'll see anyone be able to emulate this, be this type of artist ever again. He's not the messiah, and yes, there are many impressive street artists at work every day, but what he achieves, consistently, is quite special and shouldn't be taken for granted.
