Huge crime network forging Banksy, Warhol and Picasso uncove, by STP on Nov 11, 2024 17:37:34 GMT 1, Carabinieri and Pisa prosecutor say 38 people being investigated with about 2,100 fake artworks seized.
Italian police have uncovered a large-scale pan-European forgery network making and selling fake artworks attributed to some of the biggest names in modern and contemporary art including Banksy, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.
Thirty-eight people were placed under investigation in Italy, Spain, France and Belgium on suspicion of conspiracy to handle stolen goods, forgery and illegal sale of artworks, the paramilitary Carabinieri art squad and the Pisa prosecutors’ office said in a joint statement on Monday.
The chief prosecutor of Pisa, Teresa Angela Camelio, said experts from the Banksy archive who assisted with the investigation considered Monday’s operation as “the biggest act of protection of Banksy’s work“.
Pest Control, the office that represents the artist, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On its website, it says forgery is common and urges people who want to buy any Banksy pieces to watch out for “expensive fakes“.
Other allegedly forged artists included giants of 19th- and 20th-century art such as Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Henry Moore, Marc Chagall, Francis Bacon, Paul Klee and Piet Mondrian.
Investigators said they had seized more than 2,100 fake pieces, with a potential market value of about €200m (£165m) and discovered six forgery workshops including two in Tuscany, one in Venice and the rest elsewhere in Europe.
They said their investigation started in 2023 when they seized about 200 fake pieces from the collection of a businessman in Pisa, including a copy of a drawing by the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani.
That led them to forgeries sold by auction houses across Italy, and to connect them to a known group believed to specialise in forgeries of Banksy and Warhol.
To boost their credentials, the unnamed suspects organised two Banksy exhibitions with a published catalogue in prestigious locations in Mestre near Venice and Cortona in Tuscany, investigators said.

Huge crime network forging Banksy, Warhol and Picasso uncove, by PC Baby on Nov 12, 2024 0:00:50 GMT 1, Those two exhibitions mentioned, (in Mestre: 'Banksy Painting Walls' and in Cortona: 'Banksy Forever') looked shocking - how could you possibly believe these are all real works created by Banksy, especially the 'Flower Thrower' (conveniently from a private collection), where the bunch of flowers has the finesse and detail of a red blob! Why is it so difficult to understand that such exhibitions are just huge money-spinners, nothing else?

Huge crime network forging Banksy, Warhol and Picasso uncove, by Hugos There on Nov 12, 2024 10:55:03 GMT 1, I've been contacting auction houses around the world for a few years now since I studied the Picasso Vollard suite and realised there were loads of fakes coming from a source in Italy. Most were pulled from sale although some auction houses still let them through which makes you wonder about their ethics and morals if not just their expertise.
At first they were selling them with coa's and that's where they slipped up. The dates were wrong.
However, the etchings were amazing and there must be a lot of people who have been stung with them.
I'd like to think just about everybody on here can spot the rubbish Banksy fakes a mile off but watch out for the other stuff.

those exhibitions were a shame, a money grabber for common people along with minor Italian auction house selling fake despite they knew it

Huge crime network forging Banksy, Warhol and Picasso uncove, by Fuzzyduck121 on Nov 13, 2024 11:11:48 GMT 1, a miserable old git who wants to sit about all day in the boozer? it takes one to know one?! I think personally Banksy is still as serious as ever about his work and probably already planning his next move. 🙌 I was being facetious, those in the know are aware that whilst he is most certainly serious about his work he's always been a miserable bastard.
I mean who comes up with such a take on the world aside from someone cynical as fuck and utterly contemptuous of society at large? Aside from GWB is there anything that isnt a comment on the negativity of humanity albeit with some humour added? Bombs, war, capitalism, etc
I can think of perhaps 4 prints that are not a direct take on either war itself , capitalism or politics and yes of course we love it and its sometimes very funny but this isnt from the brain of someone happily pottering about the world seeing the best in everyone.
He's a miserable, grumpy, and now old bastard. Good on him I say. Takes one to know one haha

I was being facetious, those in the know are aware that whilst he is most certainly serious about his work he's always been a miserable bastard. I mean who comes up with such a take on the world aside from someone cynical as fuck and utterly contemptuous of society at large? Aside from GWB is there anything that isnt a comment on the negativity of humanity albeit with some humour added? Bombs, war, capitalism, etc I can think of perhaps 4 prints that are not a direct take on either war itself , capitalism or politics and yes of course we love it and its sometimes very funny but this isnt from the brain of someone happily pottering about the world seeing the best in everyone. He's a miserable, grumpy, and now old bastard. Good on him I say. Takes one to know one haha Yep, precisely why the artist and his other half shouldn't be anywhere near the business, money and decision making end of things. His relationship with money, the artworld and with people making money off his back can only be described as bent out of shape. It's a miracle he's investible at all. It will be interesting to see how the current Banksy era plays out over time with the people surrounding him now. you mean he should stick to selling clothes?

I mean in an ideal world his focus would be almost entirely on the creative aspect of Banksy and the people handling the business should be purely focused on that aspect and running it in a way that impacts the artists focus on creativity as little as possible. ie he focuses on his campaign and people run his business capably to negate unnecessary/avoidable issues/headaches. Problem solvers rather than problem creators would be the ideal world.

I havent seen the Warhol fakes but I guess it´s all that crab that flourish on dubious auctions and eBay. Very often fake signed dollar bills. Copies of Jackie, Marilyn etc.
