Faile - My Confessions Stencil - Cheaper than BRP, by Guest on Sept 21, 2008 23:13:43 GMT 1, I liked the image when I bought it. But I think I was caught up in the whole..."OMG I won a Faile OG" hype. Then when it came and I saw it in person, along with the damage the excitement died and I got a chance to think with a clear head. And I decided for my tastes and budget the lot of works was not worth what they were sold for, IMHO of course. I'm sure many people here think the price was great and for them they got prints/originals at a steal. Just not me. And I wish the asst's were just packaging prints. They actualkly had a group of people working on a VERY LARGE OG canvas. Not that having other people execute your work is new. Once an artist gets to a certain size most have to do this in order to be able to product the amount needed. I was just kind of surprised - for some reason.
Thanks for the reply, I can understand your disappointment of the piece being damaged in the mail, but that sometimes happens with the postal service. I was more than happy with the work i bought from the lottery, even more so when i received the piece. All artists of their size use assistants and you cant make a judgement on the amount of work they were doing, when you only visited the studio to return a print.

Faile - My Confessions Stencil - Cheaper than BRP, by James Smith 77 on Sept 22, 2008 5:59:51 GMT 1, Unfortunately, there is no way the piece was damaged by the postal system. It was EXTREMELY well packaged in 2 tubes and completely WW3 proof. I think part of the problem arose when the piece was wrapped in rice paper and the overlapping paper was pushed inwards to fit into the tube, creating pressure creases on the papers edge. The second problem was actual paper damage and even a hole. I think this arose from there being some sort of rough substance on a table that the piece was laying on top of. Once weight was applied to the piece it caused the paper to press against the rough substance (dirt/ rocks or something) damaging the paper. It would have been nice to have a Faile original hanging on my wall. But once I thought about it, it wasn't even an original after all but rather a colorway. And there are alot of colors out there.

Faile - My Confessions Stencil - Cheaper than BRP, by James Smith 77 on Sept 22, 2008 6:04:00 GMT 1, I also agree that it is difficult to judge the exact amount of work being done by assistants. But...they did look quite cozy in the locations I saw everyone in. Patricks at desks and the assistants getting busy on a canvas. Not that this takes anything away from Faile. I'm sure they have complete control over every inch of every work: color, placement, subject. Some of my favorite artists use assistants: Shepard Fairey, Murakami, Zhang huan, Kehinde Wiley, etc. It was just interesting.

No footprint or pubic hairs? I don't think it was hand finished enough.

Faile - My Confessions Stencil - Cheaper than BRP, by gozgoz on Sept 22, 2008 14:03:30 GMT 1, Why does an artist have to do his own art?
Murakami doesnt do any of his own art.
Damian Hirst doesnt do any of his own art.
You dont expect Frank Gehry or Norman Foster to build their museums/houses which are works of art in itself. So why expect the artist to do their own work?
So long as the artists approve of it, should it matter?

Faile - My Confessions Stencil - Cheaper than BRP, by James Smith 77 on Sept 22, 2008 15:42:17 GMT 1, At the end of the day it does matter to me. Idealy I want an original to be made by the hands of the artist. This is what I am paying for after all. This may sound crazy but I like the idea of owning a piece of the artists life. If an original took the artist 5hrs to complete, in a sense I own a window into the artists mind for that time. I used to want to buy a Kehinde Wiley original, but recently I found out he has 9 chinese students that paint ALL of his paintings. I was a bit disturbed at the fact that he is an incredibly talented painter and I want to own a work he paints, but can't because he is having other artists mass producing them. One of my favorite things to do is look at the detail of a well executed painting/drawing to see the skills of that artist. If the artist isn't even executing the work you are looking at the work of some other artist. I don't really know where I'm going with this rambling. The answer to your question is - Yes to me it matters whether the artist/s execute there own work and don't just sign the works.

Never heard of him until now, his work is either absolutely insane or utter genius.

Faile - My Confessions Stencil - Cheaper than BRP, by James Smith 77 on Sept 22, 2008 17:07:03 GMT 1, His work is great and collected by alot of major collectors/museums. Most important to me though is his advanced technique. I have seen a number of his original works (that he actually executed) and the detail is incredible and skill obvious. I have also seen some of his more recent paintings (executed by 9 chinese workers) and though executed extremely well, I found myself distraught when realizing he didn't even do them...just signed them.

OUCH! That's a lot of money for a editioned print. I didn't buy one and I'm still hurting on behalf of the buyer/seller here. To put things in perspective, $5,000 gets you a original hand-painted Barry McGee bottle or 3 Shepard Fairey pieces on wood or metal PLUS a classic print!

Faile - My Confessions Stencil - Cheaper than BRP, by edcase on Sept 23, 2008 10:20:55 GMT 1, It's not an editioned print! Read the description. It's a hand-done acrylic and spraypaint stencil. Technically an editioned original, same as the nick walker ghetto ghosts etc.

Faile - My Confessions Stencil - Cheaper than BRP, by motor on Sept 23, 2008 11:37:24 GMT 1, When I returned my print I dropped it off at their studio and I saw something I didn't expect. Faile had many staff doing their work for them. The Patricks were sitting behind desks.
Funny thing when I walked into their studio, Patricks were doing all the work and assistants were sitting behind the desk.
Edcase - I agree with you about the description. I have one of the stencils and it's far from an edition print. Maadbeats - thanks for an inspiration regarding how to frame it. Looks fantastic.

Is that why Faile has it listed under "prints" in their shop?
