Is Nick Walker Banksy?, by andyctree on May 12, 2008 22:53:50 GMT 1, typical American confusion. I find it funny that everything that is outside of the U.S is either reported wrong or not at all. Half of America did not know the UK was there until David Beckham went to L.A, then i laughed when the dolphins came to Wembley to play a match and one of the players did not know we spoke English in England Sums it up really.
I hate to break it to you but no one gives 2 shits about Beckham in the US. Except for Alexi Lalas.
Go listen to your Jay-Z, and cry about how Oasis broke up.

Is Nick Walker Banksy?, by artstylee on May 13, 2008 8:11:03 GMT 1, GET BACK ON TOPIC POLITICAL DOUCHEBAGS. ART
So 3 Unsigned "Banksys" mysteriously popped up around LA/Hollywood a few days prior to the opening of Nick Walker's 1st Solo Show in US a few months back in Feb 08.
And Banksy also painted over his famous LA/Hollywood piece "No More Heroes" Piece replacing it w/ "Fame Is a Basic Human Right" days before the Nick Walker show opening.
All of this Banksy action in the LA area during that time only to build up to the Nick Walker Show without a Banksy Finale Piece, or Ever directing the attention, and built up hype to anything Banksy related, just Nick Walker.... wonder why?.
The pieces were done by Banksy in order to direct you towards the Nick Walker show. Do you really think the high end museums/ art history books really want to have to credit a Character like Banksy for art accomplishments. His work is so widely accepted people are essentially begging for him to Vandalize their property. So I think it's a safe time for him to come out and get the recognition he deserves. Especially if the intention is to do collaborative shows with Mr. Damien Hirst. Who isn't affraid to stand behind his work without having to call himself by some silly nickname. Don't think art world gives awards to artists who poke fun at the art world and follow that up with and inability to stand behind their work with their birth name.
I know when you're creating on the streets it's a no brainer that you don't really want people to know your realy name but as I said before any building in their right mind would allow him to paint on it in order to have their property value go up 150,000+. Is the name Banksy actually necessary if their is really no need to Hide form anybody who would attempt to impede his artistic progress on the streets. Would really be a joke if somebody stopped him from doing work on a wall (police officer, building owners, do gooders etc.). He can pay any ticket, cover any fine, and grease any palm,... so what is the use for the name Banksy?
Probably just glad enough that he drew attention to the street art world and created a platform for other artists who creat art he appreciates and is willing to move beyond that name now.
The end result of the Banksy work in LA directing you the Nick Walker show is that the Nick Walker 1st Solo Show Sells out and the Bonhams Auction sells his work for 100,000+.
Truthfully I think Banksy is a collective and Nick Walker is part of that like Aiko is part of Faile. Somebody had to keep the Elephant in place while Banksy #1a holds/sprays the stencil.
Now all my Banksy forum members it's now time to tear me up, and discredit this post with no proof or supporting evidence so you can add a number to your Posts rating on this forum.
PS If Banksy isn't a collective then how did he distribute and put back 400+ Doctored Paris Hilton discs back into the stores in the Uk by himself.

Is Nick Walker Banksy?, by radarwax on May 13, 2008 9:25:52 GMT 1, artstylee Great post.
I'm American and this thread is pretty negative toward us. JBoy was poking fun and thats fine, hes pretty funny once in awhile.
I also agree that the Walker is Banksy statement is wrong. Most people in the US dont know who he is ( New York maybe). I doubt she even understood what was going on. She was getting her 15 minutes of fame. Yes we do live in a bubble and some of are trying to get out. Some of us are dumb jocks, some of us want to be famous, some of us dont give a sh1t about soccer. But thats only SOME of us. Others like whats going on outside the US and try to see and feel it. Dont lump everyone together.
Get back to talking about art. Thats why Im here and so are you.

Is Nick Walker Banksy?, by pelle on May 13, 2008 9:51:29 GMT 1, So 3 Unsigned "Banksys" mysteriously popped up around LA/Hollywood a few days prior to the opening of Nick Walker's 1st Solo Show in US a few months back in Feb 08. The pieces were done by Banksy in order to direct you towards the Nick Walker show.
That sounds quite reasonable, even though there are those who believe that the pieces were meant to steal the thunder from the Walker show. I tend to believe the same as you, though. Perhaps with the difference, that I think Banksy did do them and he's not Nick Walker (or vice versa).
Yes, absolutely. Because it's something new, it has an impact, and the artworld loves something new and semi-provocative, as long as its representatives get to judge it.
All Banksy really has going for him, in my opinion, is the myth surrounding him. The fact that he is unknown and that what he does is illegal is what everyone including the high end museums and established art historians are interested in. This focus on myth is also what eventually will cause problems (it already is), because as he is going bigger and becoming more accepted the de facto value of the vandal myth is naturally decreased in the process.
But if Banksy came out and became a regular gallery artist, he would be slaughtered. As I said, the myth is all. His street work is usually really good, but 90% of his gallery work is without much artistic merit.
Technically Warhol wasn't a collective, neither is Murakami. But they do (or did) have many assistants who help them out. There's a difference.

Is Nick Walker Banksy?, by imbue on May 13, 2008 10:03:12 GMT 1, Are we forgetting one thing...?
Walker is not nearly as good as Banksy. Would Banksy really reveal his true identity by producing work that is not as good...?
Walker and his PR team are probably putting these rumors out there just to increase the hype around him and guarantee high auction prices.

Walker is not nearly as good as Banksy. Would Banksy really reveal his true identity by producing work that is not as good...?
Walker and his PR team are probably putting these rumors out there just to increase the hype around him and guarantee high auction prices.

Is Nick Walker Banksy?, by victorwilliams on May 13, 2008 10:24:46 GMT 1, Cans festival....
Banksy does the gorilla with cap piece, most think its a dig at NW. Maybe he is symbolizing that banksy and NW are the same person. Also there was no NW work at cans, Banksy/NW must not of had time to do piece for two of the biggest stencil artists in the game so they chose to concentrate on Banksy work then head over to the US to do a bit of NW promo........

By far the most sensible post on this thread...
Have people forgotten the hype and PR surrounding the NW show already?
and even if it's not a deliberate exercise in boosting auction prices, if you were NW and every time you went out painting the streets people asked you if you were Banksy, wouldn't you occasionally be tempted to say yes, if only to relieve the boredom of saying no?

I agree... I can't believe this "topic" is being discussed this way (or at all for that matter).
