Faile, by slowmo on Apr 22, 2008 17:20:07 GMT 1, Having seen manty's walls, he has plenty of taste! Faile are cool, but its not gonna be to everyones liking. One thing they were well ahead on was putting love into their prints, lots of hand finishing, which these days now seems to be a pre-requisite to any print purchase. They are also really good at working images, so each time you see them done in another way they always look fresh.
It looks good on the street and great in a gallery, they have put out work that was affordable for years and they deserve the attention they are receiving from the Tate as I feel they really bring a lot to this type of art, very influential to many artists admired on this forum.
There is a faile for everyone, even if you don't like em much, one of their bits will grab you because they are so prolific and so varied in their approach.

Faile, by robertlondon on Apr 22, 2008 18:04:00 GMT 1, Faile - Their images are there to stimulate thought - to question what's going on in the picture. Their early stuff was of naked women lying on beds, it was just meant to appear beautiful and thought provoking - a contrast to the political stuff that was usually pasted up.
They've developed as artists and now their work is often concerned with the weathering of street art - numerous layers, ripped and on top of one another. You often see this on their large canvases.
I think they're also probably more likely to collaborate (at least in the past) than other artists.

Yeah, so im wondering what ever gave him that title.... seriously, the Rats thing. someone explain it to me. Besides it being simple and clean lines.
Why Blek? and not say... Miss Tic? (well i guess that would be Godmother of Stencil Graf... doesnt quite have the same ring to it...), Nemo? Jerome Mesnager?

I like the Rats for a couple of reasons.
What I really like on my walls inside are street images that have done their time outside so to me collecting stencil based stuff these are like a holy grail, one of the first images to be stencilled in Europe and arguably the first in this era of stencilled art. I love the historical significance and really feel privileged to get to look after a part of the history of this "scene".
I like the use of rats in graf, I don't think Blek meant them like this but anyway. For a lot of my life I've been one of the rats, unloved and unwanted by society but always there, impossible to get rid of and ultimately surviving and thriving whatever is thrown at us. I love the symbology of the rat and I know my thoughts are more in line with Banksys Rats but it's still a rat and when I bought mine I was lucky enough to get it at a price that was about half that of the cheapest Banksy Rat. I read recently that the image is in fact a shadow of a rat which kind of makes it even better in my mind, it's a rat but it's not even really there, we don't see it, it passes us by and we ignore it. The other Blek image that makes me feel like this is Beggar.
Don't know why he's the Godfather except if Banksys the Daddy then Blek has to come first, suppose it sounds better than the Grandad of graf, although that does have a bit of a ring to it ;D
Anyhow that's why I like them

Faile, by gozgoz on Apr 22, 2008 20:35:37 GMT 1, hmm... that makes sense... i kinda see it now.... thanks for that! also i didnt know it was the shadow of a rat... ok ok... i can vaguely see the semblence of an appeal...
you should check out Nemo and Mesnager too. If Blek is grandad, Mesnager would be right there in the geriatric home with him.
you would like Nemo and Mesnagers stuff too.. because its more about the concept of the art than the art itself.

Just did a quick image search for Nemo and Mesnager, good stuff cheers. Think I like Nemo more can see lots of inspiration has come from some of that stuff but some of Mesnagers placements are amazing, really interacting with the environment. I'm going to look more when I'm not so tired.

if you were french, u will like Miss Tic too. cos its a lot of french nuuances.
Im annoyed that Mesnager and Nemo dont get enough exposure as Blek. So i try to bring people's attention to them. In fact it was Orbi from the Space Invader crew who introduced me to them a nd I was blown away. Cos all these were done years and years ago ago. possibly before Blek.

Faile, by fool4faile on May 26, 2008 18:41:30 GMT 1, faile is really an unexplainable phenomenon- you either directly FEEL it or you don't. of course i cannot understand if you don't... but compared to a lot of other street artists i would say they operate on a deeper, almost subconscious level, they talk to the soul and once you'll let them talk to your soul, you'll get addicted (totally agree about the addiction- potential, gentlemental)...
