POW Open Day โข 2008, by kennas on Nov 23, 2008 12:16:00 GMT 1, i think it's safe to say that SG will be in New Orleans
I would change this statement slightly to read "i think it's safe to say that if there is a SG this year it will be in New Orleans".
I'm still not convinced there is going to be one, in fact I'm pretty sceptical. If there is one though, I am there. NO DOUBT!

POW Open Day โข 2008, by spirit on Nov 23, 2008 12:58:11 GMT 1, RE_ the make SG like RCA Secret idea - I'm a little confused - if it is being suggested that you get to buy an artwork that you can see and choose, but without being told who the artists is, (like RCA secret), then I don't think it would work because most of the POW artists have a pretty obvious style - spot the Kelsey Brookes anyone?
If on the other hand it is being suggested that you just purchase a random artwork from the show - like a lucky dip, then that seems like a terrible idea imo - because it makes it all about gambling, winning numbers and the potential of financial gain, not about the art at all. IMO 90% or more of the work produced in this scene is not very good. Therefore if I bought a random piece of art from the ghetto, there would be a 90+% chance that I did not like it. Personally I'd rather have a small chance of getting the thing and want, and if I fail then I get nothing and pay nothing, than have a small chance of getting what I want, and if I fail I have paid good money for some rubbish.

Exactly. Awful idea.

POW Open Day โข 2008, by lee3 on Nov 23, 2008 17:10:27 GMT 1, >>>The area is still a disaster area I'm sure and still had deep economic problems stemming from the storm - and bringing British print starving tourists to the area would be a great thing for the areas continued recovery!<<<
NOLA always had deep economic problems. Half the pre storm population will never return. Still, to blame it on Katrina is wrong imo. At the beginning of the 20th century that city was almost 12 inches higher than it stands/sinks today. Why? Because of all the offshore drilling that has taken place there over the past 100+ years. There is no way that town can survive long term because the drilling continues. I LOVE new orleans (i'm one of the annual jazz fest pilgrims) but at the same time, one has to be realistic about the laws of nature and sadly, we're probably one storm away from that realization. That's not to suggest we abandon it altogether; rather, better enjoy it while we can.
>>>The sad part is that in all the 60 pages of 'Nola' discussion, I heard barely a sliver of questioning the meaning behind the print.<<<
I have not kept up with the print discussions. Art is open to interpretation, that's part of the beauty. That image (to me) Banksy is using (once again) a little girl to represent innocence/helplessness and the umbrella to represent the government that was to protect her and instead it made her situation exponentially worse. What's your take on that image?

Then I'll suggest it. Take the next 5-10 years to strip it and prepare it for flooding and then let it go.

POW Open Day โข 2008, by monstris on Nov 24, 2008 3:41:02 GMT 1, speculation speculation. just turn up. have fun. bring a spray can and a stencil if you want. bring some beer. and don't worry too much about coming away with something more than your memories and an experience.
tho i would wear a motorcycle jacket for when you elbow that knob cheese trying to barge in for so-and-so's signature or a lick of whathisname's sweat.
does this and nola mean the ghetto is a nogo...who knows, who's in the 'inner circle', who's getting tipped off...so what? you never get to look at the art on the 'preview day' anyway. there something comic about the buy buy buy nature of these boards. i thought art was about discussion, interpretation, feeling, message. not showing off your toys in the sandpit.

I agree with you Lee3.
I think the use of grey paint as rain, is a slight point at the Grey Ghost. I also think the little girls hand out is a gesture of begging, not checking for rain.

POW Open Day โข 2008, by G-Man on Nov 24, 2008 17:27:14 GMT 1, It is so gonna be carnage if they release prints there
I can just see it now..... queues of people sleeping overnight on the Friday, more turning up early Saturday morning flippers abound!
Or....................... It'll be like Cans with some decent cheap prints available too and a great party atmosphere a few beers with some good mates and a real laugh
I am really hoping for the latter!

Think I'll pass on the mulled wine though..

POW Open Day โข 2008, by veralynn on Nov 25, 2008 19:04:36 GMT 1, Willow St and surrounding area just isn't 'big' enough for this type of event.
I think that numbers have been significantly underestimated - at what point does 'carnage' spill into aggravation? I think some kind of ticketing system is inevitable.

I should think most people are gonna turn up on the first day so its easily gonna be in the hundreds early in the day.
