I live in the UK, i'll suppose I will just wait for the Gordon Brown print - that will look ultra sexy on my wall.

David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by Heavyconsumer on Aug 20, 2008 19:04:49 GMT 1, My only 'hope' is that all these people backing Obama don't look like idiots in 4 years time. Tony Blair was our 'hope' once..... what a t**t he turned out to be.
They're artists being commissioned to design posters! I honestly don't see an imposing political statement in a guy like Choe (or at least my perception of him) doing something like this. I can see that someone like Obey or English WILL be interpreted as having made a statement, because of context (ie: other work they've done being politically relevant or in Obey's case making his support of Obama quite apparent), but I think the description of the print says it all really "ongoing series from Upper Playground of artist collaborations in support of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. "

David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by Grubster on Aug 20, 2008 19:28:30 GMT 1, this is what CHOE had to say!!!!!
I'm just an artist. All I do is paint pretty pictures, and sometimes when I go someplace and the Asian kids recognize me they project all their hopes and dreams on me like I was the next coming of Bruce Lee, like Iโm a role model, and I start to get stressed out. I'm just an artist.
Obama might soon be the most powerful man in the world. That's heavy. Iโm not really a political person, but our country is in such a mess, and if Obama gets elected next, I canโt even believe the pressure this guys gonna be under. Heโs gotta carry the weight of the world on his shoulders and lead the entire nation. Millions will look up to him, while others will look down on him under close scrutiny. This society we live in just waits for people to fall, so they can point and laugh at our imperfections on late night TV.
So I was looking at this newspaper of a profile of Obama's head, and looking at a globe in my room, and I was thinking of an atlas kind of image with Obama carrying the world on his shoulders. Heโs gonna have to become like a superhero to get us through this, but this battle is not so much physical in that it's more mental. It was late at night and my eyes were getting kind of blurry and I noticed Florida all the way to the bottom tip of Texas on my globe โ looked like they followed Obama's hairline on his side profile. I sketched out Obama on the computer and put a map of the U.S. around his head, and it fit perfectly. America with all its ills and beauty, with all its economic, racial, religious, and political problems weighing heavy on Obama's mind, but for the first time, in a very long time, there seems like there's hope.

Thanks for this post. It reflects my initial gut feeeling that Choe isn't really a political activist at all and that he has taken on an artistic project from someone he's affiliated with, without wanting necessarily to endorse one party or another, or without caring too much either way. Does this sound like a guy who'll be casting his vote? I don't think so. I'm not knocking Choe, as stated I love a lot of his work and think he's a monster artist amongst the most talented of those we regularly discuss, but poilitics just doesn't seem like his bag! Yet.

David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by raiden on Aug 20, 2008 19:43:15 GMT 1, Being a US citizen who suffered 8 years under Bush, I am an Obama fanatic. While I would find it equally weird putting a Gordon Brown image on my wall - for American liberals this really is a seminal election like no other with massive domestic and world implications - and I equally can't understand Brits who don't understand how this passion and importance doesn't translate to the arts of this year. Granted, I feel Obama imagery has become a bit of a bandwagon exercise, but the passion for this election runs incredibly deep.
Permit a second of political discussion only for sake of context...
An Obama loss would literally cripple the Democratic party and what is left of the liberal establishment in America. No candidate has ever raised as much money as Obama has and if he loses, it turns the entire Democratic political platform on its head and many political theorists say it could begin a realignment period in American politics, which can be massively destabilizing.
McCain is basically as right if not farther than Bush on foreign policy and extremely hawkish - and frankly his election will do nothing to regain any of the world respect lost by the previous regime. Several of our liberal Supreme Court Justices are threatening to retire - which means McCain's election will likely drastically tilt the balance of power in our court systems to the conservatives too.
I don't want to go on much longer, save to say the liberalism in America largely depends on Obama's success and the hopes of a nation to once again gain world respect and get out of the pits of corruption from the petro/military industrial complex all rest on his shoulders.
So while you may not like the aesthetics of a particular Obama piece, I think the reason someone would add an Obama piece to their wall is clear: Obama represents hope that things will get better after the disastrous Bush administration - and I personally have his image plastered to my phone, my shirt, my car, etc. because I don't want to think about the possibility of another 4 years of American Republicanism.

I completely agree with raiden and will add that if Mccain wins, my wife and I agreed that we would move overseas for a few years.

$500 is a lot if you are unemployed or not . In the UK no one gives a shit and its only criminals wanting visas who give money . It's amazing how 2 countries which are relatively similar can have such a different approach to elections.

Eh? You're saying that painting a portrait of Obama with 'HOPE' in big letters isn't making a political statement but just painting a pretty picture? This print doesn't have any meaning?
I guess the people churning out nazi propaganda posters were thinking 'well, i'm not fussed about the message but i'm really proud of how imposing that Zeppelin looks.'
I hope more than anything that Obama wins, but i'm reluctant to pin my hopes for the future of the planet on someone who hasn't actually revealed any policies yet.

Come on PA, I didn't say that at all. I just dont think the statement is being made so much by this artist, as the gallery/publisher who's commissioned him for this project. I feel that he looked at it from an artistic perspective more than from a political one and that in and of itself the fact the HE has done this doesn't make him an activist so much as a man doing his job imo. I also think that grub1323's quote kind of confirms this.

David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by Prescription Art on Aug 20, 2008 20:42:52 GMT 1, Oh hang on, the post I replied to has gone.
Anyway HC. I respectfully suggest that you're talking shite!
So someone said 'Hey David, here's 10 grand, do you mind knocking up a couple of Obama portraits for us'?
David: 'Obama? Who the fuck's that?'
'Oh just some politician. Don't worry about it. He's a black dude so he's cool &s**t'.
David: 'Sounds good to me. Show me the money & i'll have 'em for you by tomorrow'
An artist just does not release portraits of politicians unless you're making a statement coming out in support of that politician.
There are two exceptions. 1: You're doing the portrait under a threat of violence by an oppressive regime. 2: You make the portrait out of cocks and vaginas like Jonathan Yeo.
Anyway, this is a stupid argument!

Talking politics, Boris Johnson on BBC1 should be a good watch.

David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by Happy Shopper on Aug 20, 2008 21:02:15 GMT 1, David Cameron VS Obama ! Sort of different don't you think ?
Possibly the first black President of the USA, and possibly the man to lead the US out of the mire that it's in (and the "War on Terror"). I think many here are underestimating the importance culturally of this. It's not like it's a poster for another white, upper class Tory!!
