Yes might be one of his best I agree.
Well spotted it is number 74/77... 2 letter fillings are missing the H and R plus the varnish.
I have a normal black edition framed and hanging in my son's bedroom.

The reason the a-z struck a chord with me was that i lived in and around bethnal green for a while so saw them going up from the early days, cant remember him ever painting a number on shutters in the early days.

As for the numbers... I like 'em. I have a shutter number AP on white and it's beautiful in its own right. Even though I agree with you Saint that you rarely see them on walls; as a fully completed typeface I think having them makes sense. (Apart from the missing W that is!)
