BAST has he lost it?, by slowmo on May 22, 2009 21:22:05 GMT 1, Actually, I think he is going through a faze you don't like (nor I). He can produce very diverse work, some I love, some I don't. I think the stuff in Laz on Rathbone is weak, but loved the leonard street work. However they both were following a theme, he is clearly a person who follows what feels right for him at the time, so if you did like him, you might like him again, or not, but he has certainly not lost it, as he has nothing to lose.

BAST has he lost it?, by jusdeep on May 22, 2009 21:38:02 GMT 1, On a whole I would have to agree with you Neale (I like Popeye but it's not his strongest by a long way). 'One man's meat is another man's poison' and I think Bast's work although consistant most find it hard to swallow. Don't want to quote the Marmite thing again, as with this topic of discussion it's getting a little tired and drawn out (no offence).

BAST has he lost it?, by Guest on May 22, 2009 22:21:00 GMT 1, No one has seen this print yet (calling card) only a jpeg image, so it would be very difficult to judge the quality of the finish. I personally haven't liked any of the POW Bast prints apart from Mickey.
I don't think you can say he's lost it though on this one print, there are way too many good Bast works out there.

Yeah, Bast has a very strong style in a similar way to other Artists like Sickboy and Eine. Its not the sort of thing that panders to what they think people want, they just stick to it. Good honest Art ;D
But Im not liking this latest one

BAST has he lost it?, by weeble on May 22, 2009 23:16:46 GMT 1, for me, regardless of composition or technique, colour or cost, I just don't get the subject matter. Is if a portrait? Of an old dude in a hat? Smoking a pipe?! Mickey seemed way more interesting, even though I think that's been done to death. Like his technique but to me nothing as of yet has been particularly interesting enough to hang on the wall.

The pure crude, vibrant, challenging and raw energy he delivers with each unique piece has to be experienced to be understood.
Maybe he should stop doing prints and keep what is significant about his work alive.
A true talent.

BAST has he lost it?, by grantb on May 23, 2009 0:56:47 GMT 1, I guess his work can be a bit too hard core for some people as I said earlier, I think Sickboys work is similar in the way that it dunt always appeal to people with more middle of the road art tastes. I dont mean that to sound like a bad thing, its just people have come to this scene from different directions and backgrounds
to me sickboy is one of the best out there.

BAST has he lost it?, by Gentle Mental on May 23, 2009 3:38:13 GMT 1, Bast is THE man. His influence is undeniable. His style is mad. He is the originator.
Many great street artists wouldn't have existed without Bast as inspiration.
He is not going through a phase. We are.
IMHO, of course.

This whole thread is interesting to me because I really feel that Bast is back in top form. It started with this new pink Paris print for me and carries all the way through Doyle and this new one (I haven't bought any of them). I really like where his work is right now - it's in the pocket of what I love about Bast. I hope he keeps it up for my sake...

Absolutely agree Gentlemental. Well said. Looking at the whole Street Art scene I can say that he is one of the few who's not a pretentious follower but always has been the leader. As I said before love or hate (even for me) however he is one of few artists who's work excites me as you never know what will he come up with next.
Good point Iloveartonwalls too, regarding stronger and weaker releases from the artists. Every artist has done or (will do) some shite at some point but that doesn't mean he/she has lost it. (I should mentioned here that most so called artists here never had it in the first place but sure it ain't Mr Bรคst)

Top Artist, with a great style! ;D ;D ;D

Strange is'nt it how people's taste's vary? As i actually like his collage style translated in to a print format. I think his latest collage pieces have been weak, i love Bast work, but most of the time i prefer the prints to his originals, thats just my personal taste.

You have to judge some work when you see it, not on a computer screen. I didn't like the new POW release, but seeing it framed may change my view...

I have to disagree about his latest collages being weak - the ones on display at Rathbone Place are awsome IMO.
