Banksy visitors overwhelm gallery
Almost a quarter-of-a-million people have filed through Banksy's homecoming exhibition since it opened in June.
Bristol's council-owned gallery has been overwhelmed with visitors, with some people queuing for up to four hours to see Banksy vs Bristol Museum.
"We knew it was going to be big but I don't think we appreciated just how big," a council spokesperson said.
The graffiti artist's show, featuring animatronics and installations, was kept secret until the day it opened.
Demand to see the show has been so high that queues continue to snake almost a mile every day, and the museum has arranged for late-night opening on a Wednesday.
The museum is in talks with Banksy's team about further late night openings until the exhibition closes on 31 August.
"The exhibition has drawn in people from around the world," the spokesperson added.
"It's not just local people and visitors from the UK who want to see this. We have had people from all over, including Finland, Japan, New York and even Uzbekistan."
When the exhibition first opened in Bristol queues of up to an hour were the limit, but as it nears its end even more visitors have been flocking to see it.
The queue was closed at 1230 BST on Saturday as the waiting time peaked at four hours.
With a 650 capacity in the gallery, organisers are operating a two-in-two-out policy.
Nigel Meggitt, from London, was one of thousands of people who queued on Saturday.
He joined the queue at 1030 BST, and made it into the gallery at 1430 pm - four hours later.
"We went along expecting a long queue, so we were prepared," he said.
"We took a newspaper, and one of us was able to leave the queue to go to the shop and buy food.
"It was part of the day, part of the experience, and you have to be prepared to queue if you want to see the exhibition."
The council spokesperson added: "Managing the queue has been a challenge, but the best thing is that people have been very good natured.
"Even though people have had this huge wait, people have said the exhibition, with it's quirky and challenging pieces, is amazing."

Banksy visitors overwhelm gallery, by hlarmy on Aug 17, 2009 14:29:55 GMT 1, Not sure whether this has been discussed before, but why don't they extend the show beyond August? My uncle made a 3 hour trip to go and see it on what he thought was going to be a quiet Tuesday and couldn't get in. It's such a shame that people aren't going to be able to see the show, esp seeing queues are only going to be getting longer between now and the end of August....

Banksy visitors overwhelm gallery, by shaunyboy on Aug 17, 2009 14:37:34 GMT 1, They really need to have late night opening every day.
Hope is here:- "The museum is in talks with Banksy's team about further late night openings until the exhibition closes on 31 August."
Its just a shame it's taken so long.

Banksy visitors overwhelm gallery, by Urban Cowboy on Aug 17, 2009 14:38:48 GMT 1, I was in the queue at 8:45 yesterday (Sunday) , finally got in about 12:15 and was chatting to one of the museum staff. She said no chance of an extension due to scheduling, Dellboyy you are correct!
Posters and postcards a plenty in the shop too.

Banksy visitors overwhelm gallery, by chief on Aug 23, 2009 18:16:14 GMT 1, I got there at 10am and the queue was 5 1/2 hours today. I flew into London from New York specifically for this, slept literally one hour, took the train over, upon which both train attendants failed to give me my credit card back. So when I got there and was 4 people in front of the attendant at the end with the sign I was not having it. He said 5 1/2 hours and we STILL weren't guaranteed entry which scared me. I chatted with the people around me whom were all nice, then decided to go down to the bottom and walk back up while filming a video of the longest queue I've ever seen. When I got down there, something just completely struck me to walk from the one large portion to the smaller portion near the entrance. I acted as if I belonged there and the lady handed me a pamphlet. The guy in front of me said "nice one" and I told them my story. Waited in the line about 10 minutes and the lady behind me was like "where's you're stamp?!?!" And started flipping out on me causing a very awkward scene. So I hung my head in shame and walked out of the line. As I got back to the pamphlet lady I let her see that I was on the queue side and said "they forgot to give me by stamp" and acted really upset, and said something to the effect I had to leave the line to use the bathroom then my girlfriend got in while I was in there, blah blah, so she took me over and gave me a stamp! went back in the line, kept my head down, and eventually got in, no more than 10 minutes later. I really felt bad about it to be honest, but I really had zero choice. I came halfway around the world not knowing the queues would be this out of control.
Show was really impressive I might add and I got in and got out because of my guilt. Probably no more than 30 minutes.
It was a nice feeling coming into Bristol. It was almost as if this was Banksy's gift to the city and you were going to a friends hometown. All the tourism isgenerating some much needed cash during this economy, it's almost ironic the man who "devalues" walls does so much in so many ways. I love it.

Banksy visitors overwhelm gallery, by sug on Aug 23, 2009 23:55:49 GMT 1, I was expecting queues but nothing like this. Stupidly thought it'd get quieter as the show went on but it looks like the opposite has happened.
