banksy canvas keep it real, by geebo on Aug 25, 2009 15:04:24 GMT 1, hi... i'm new to the board here, and came here for a particular reason. my wife bought my a banksy canvas about... ooh, i dunno, maybe 6-8 yrs ago. she brought it from santa's ghetto and got all the stuff going with it - the perforated stamp/flyer things and a fistful of the designated graffiti area stickers.
it's not very big.... maybe 7" by 7" or something like that... bright red "keep it real" monkey. it's been hanging on my wall ever since, but it has no signature or anything to prove it's the real thing. can anyone tell me how this could be proved? i am NOT looking to sell it, but i imagine most of the stuff on ebay is fake, or cheap repro's.
anyone with any info on how to validate the authenticity or give me a vague idea of how much it's worth would be hugely appreciated.

banksy canvas keep it real, by geebo on Aug 25, 2009 16:13:45 GMT 1, holy sh*t! i figured it would be worth some bucks, but nowhere near that much!! thank you all VERY much for your incredibly speedy and informative replies. while i was waiting for anyone to read this, i saw another post about this pestcontrol site... will they give me some kind of guarantee of authenticity (for a fee)? even at that MASSIVE price, i'm not sure i woudl sell it (i'm sure value will keep going up and up!) - but would like the peace of mind, having proof like that!
can you believe, i used to have this hanging in my kitchen... and i used to be a heavy smoker! it's now upstairs in a spare room - but i will now be moving it out of reach of my 4 yr old son!!!

They are probably busy, the DVD drops very soon. Just be patient, as you said... you only just sent the info off

Could be the sort of thing they need Banksy to look at in person, so might take a bit longer than a print would.

i'll try and up a photo soon - the authentication certificate is pretty cool in itself... it's a torn half of one of the diana tenners (which i think is signed)
i know it'll keep going up in value - but i'm too paranoid to keep it hanging in the house, so it's just sitting in a box, in bubble wrap, which seems like a waste! i need to sort insurance, and i'm skint at the moment... taking a chunk of the mortgage away would be a big help..... oh the dilemma!

you've got nothing to lose by contacting pest control, but if it's a print with no signature, number or blind stamp then i'm afraid to say you might be out of luck.
that's not to say it's not printed at the same time as the other ones, but as it's not numbered i think pest control / pow don't consider it to be part of the edition and therefore can't give it a coa.

you'll be gutted then fella, it's a backdoor print at best (one printed alongside the main edition/editions but that slipped out the backdoor, usually taken by the person who printed them) - either way it's worthless without a COA or some kind of provenance back to POW.
PC will never in a million years issue a cert for a backdoor print but by all means contact them for your peace of mind.

i'd approach Sotheby's the next time they are holding an Urban Art auction, you could also contact Eleanor at Andipa gallery - i'm sure they could place this for you.

@ babydave - yeah, they did all from the pictures (quite an extensive lots of pictures at that... inside of the canvas etc etc), and they did indeed provide me with the certificate of authenticity. main difference here is that mine isn't (wasn't) a print but a canvas.
anyway, some 2 years after my first enuiries i'm afraid to say that i've cracked under pressure and it's going to go to auction at Sotheby's at their Contemporary Art day in June. fingers crossed it's worth my while... hate to see it go, i really do, but needs must sadly.
