Any Parla's Out There, by snausages on Oct 22, 2009 0:30:06 GMT 1, Here ya go, another chance for JP dude. 48 x 72 inches for 25-35k usd. A bargain some might say. But sounds about right to me. Who was it that was selling watercolors for close to this price!? Ridiculous. But the floodgates have opened, acquired directly from the artist and submitted so soon to Sotheby's? Shows where peoples heads are on this stuff. www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?lot_id=159559924

go to the main page for the auction itself and view the e-catalogue. You can see the picture there.
It is a very nice example of Parla's work.

Any Parla's Out There, by lee3 on Oct 22, 2009 17:24:09 GMT 1, Wow, looks like a speculative purchase at/near peak gone awry
From what I understand this was commissioned long ago when prices were much more in line with the estimate range but obviously delivery was taken this year given the date. So, I don't think it necessarily went awry but having work come up to auction for any artist that is this fresh isn't doing anybody any favors. On the other hand, I can appreciate anyone who has to sell art right now just to keep their life moving forward. Personally, I think this one is gorgeous and the best yet to come to auction.
LOT 359 JOSร PARLร b. 1973 AVENIDA DE ROSAS signed, titled and dated 2009 on the reverse mixed media on wood panel 48 by 72 in. 121.9 by 182.9 cm. Executed in 2007-2008, this work was signed in 2009. ESTIMATE 25,000 - 35,000 USD
>>>what was something that size going for a year or two ago<<
I made a casual inquiry over a year ago on pricing for one piece and was quoted 60k GBP before any discount (which I did not pursue) from a dealer though I don't recall if the size was as large as this. It certainly wasn't bigger but could have been smaller. But, we have to rememeber that before last October the art world was a much different market.

Could well be someone who got in over their head when buying this and two years later after delivery needs to get out. Galleries were probably retailing this for ยฃ60k a year ago, but go back to about 2006/07 and this size was retailing for about 8-12k USD.

This looks like what he/she paid based on execution dates...

Any Parla's Out There, by mutant on Oct 22, 2009 19:20:59 GMT 1, I agree it's a beautiful piece. But a loss of 30-50% of its original cost!? Ouch! I understand that this drop is roughly in line with the current art market. But a potential loss of > $15K? This seller must be in need of some cash.

Any Parla's Out There, by Francis on Oct 22, 2009 20:58:54 GMT 1, the loss or gain has not been realized yet, so they could lose more or could even gain if it gets bid up.
it's amazing how the latest parla jpg that is shown is always "the best parla i've ever seen!"

Any Parla's Out There, by snausages on Oct 22, 2009 21:17:32 GMT 1, True, they might possibly make money. I see it and think yeah, it's a nice painting, but I still think it just isn't going to resonate that much with people that aren't into the street, tagging thing and worse it keeps reminding me of that decorative abstract art, the kind you find in those cheesy galleries that cater to interior decorators who buy them up in bulk for offices or model homes, like so...

As I have always said there are plenty of people like me who really appreciate the quality of his work, I know you dont feel the same and that is fine but to constantly follow every mention of his work and slag it off is very tedious.
And no Im not defending or never have defended the prices paid, I am only defending what I see as quality work.

I repeat again:
I get that you do not appreciate Parla's work and think its a waste of money and you are completely entitled to your opinion.
