Mr Brainwash - What Do You Think?, by raiden on Aug 3, 2009 9:41:02 GMT 1, I've written long posts in the past on MBW... urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=35800&page=3
I own a MBW piece. I bought it for 1/3 the price the seller paid for it.
MBW is here to stay... partly due to the Madonna cover, but as I've said all along, at best he will be to Urban Art and Banksy what Steve Kaufman was to Pop Art and Warhol.
Don't buy him as an investment. He's a poor choice as an investment - unless you're buying secondary market for fractions of the cost. But if you like the work, go for it.
I'd say if you're going after the soup spraycan thing, buy an original from Rene Gagnon. He did the Campbells soup spraycan thing way before MBW did it and sells an original on canvas for $550 ed 10. His last show, which unfortunately was off the beaten path in his hometown, looked great from the pictures. He has world's more talent than MBW. I personally think Rene has more upside potential than MBW.
Still I wouldn't put it past MBW to consign some piece to Bonham's Urban Art Auction and then use a plant to bid it 10X estimate to further inflate his market. I just think his market is a house of cards. Just reference Steve Kaufman, who also did album covers, and you'll get what I'm saying.

Mr Brainwash - What Do You Think?, by raiden on Aug 3, 2009 10:22:51 GMT 1, Correction... Maybe its the Madonna effect, but his prints are actually selling more briskly than before on Ebay. Maybe not the worst investment for the moment.
I would expect his London show will boost his prices both because the dollar is sinking against the pound and increased overseas interest. I'll be very, very interested to see how his 3 ring art circus of all flash, little substance is received in London - nevertheless, all publicity seems like good publicity for now for MBW.
So yes, if you're a flipper, now is probably the time to be riding the MBW bandwagon - at least until two months after the Bonham's Urban Art Sale. Jump like rats off a sinking ship afterwards however.

Mr Brainwash - What Do You Think?, by Existencil on Aug 4, 2009 13:46:04 GMT 1, I purchased an Obama Superman Gold. Six weeks later I got an Obama Superman Silver in an edition twice the size. And that's only after I had to remind him I'd paid.
I think he's an absolute tit of an artist.
But good work on the Madonna cover.

If that image really was as blatantly ripped off as it appears then I'm shocked. That is a new depth of low.
"Rene Gagnon - American Post-Graffiti Abstract Expressionist"... makes a change from "urban art" anyway!
