Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Deleted on Jun 29, 2014 10:55:22 GMT 1, I've just watched my neighbours CCTV footage, unreal shows the theft as clear as day. He waits for my wife to leave, then turns up outside my house, he's in a Europecar hire van, one guy, he gets out with a crowbar in hand, 57 seconds later leaves with Stop and Search nothing else. Targeted, very professional, and he had time to take more, so it looks like it's stolen to order, he even shut the dinning room door behind him to stop the dog running out. I live in a row of terrace houses, no hesitation where he was going. If i can find a way to upload this i will, i have to say it's heart breaking to watch him leaving with my print. You can see the man and the van, Police now have a way to trace him, and hopefully find out who ordered my print.
In light of recent posts, I was reminded of this terrible incident.
Just wondering how the police got on with the caseโฆ they should have caught someone shouldn't they?
I hope you've been able to replace what was lost but it seems you had it coveredโฆ better than most.
ALTHOUGH... I don't have much faith in the police after a dental appointment card was left at a girlfriends place by a burglar... but somehow they never caught the burglar?!!?

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Dr Plip on Jun 29, 2014 14:03:20 GMT 1, The only logic I can see in this is that they wanted a original to copy? Was the original expencive or hard to get in the beginning? I don't know about its original cost, but I believe it was both expensive and hard to get at the time it was stolen. But mainly expensive.

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Deleted on Jun 29, 2014 15:33:46 GMT 1, Mhm, I googled the image. It is with many details, blurry and very fine drawn lines. Not easy to copy through a picture. My guess is they needed a original to scan, and copy. Probably on total different location on earth, there are very good copys sold as originals at gallerys maybe even. I think most people agree on here - me included - that it was a steal-to-order. Someone knew it was there, wanted it, and didn't care about the COA or anything. They paid some thugs with a van to break into the house and take it, and now it's on that person's wall in his/her weird private shrine.
Really terrible story. Really. I hope everything has gotten better.

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Deleted on Jun 29, 2014 16:53:05 GMT 1, But so strange? It would cost someone to order one that way? Who with money would like to have a stolen piece? I don't get it. Really really strange. Why order just that specific one? There are plenty for sale, at different cost. I meant it was likely someone local who saw the piece in the house, and wanted it. Someone without enough money to buy a Banksy, but with enough money to pay off two robbers to snatch it from the house.
Paying robbers costs probably $100-200, whereas paying for a S&S at the time was probably around $4,000.

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Deleted on Jun 29, 2014 17:19:05 GMT 1, It is still a stolen print. A Banksy on the wall will draw attention to it. Who would like attention for a stolen one. Pay burglares? Just for a image that can't see the daylight. Still think the motive would be money, a stolen print wont make that money. The same people that buy/are interested in all other stolen art. I.e. a drug kingpin with a stolen Rembrandt on the wall, people like that. Usually the type of people/place where the fact that it's stolen doesn't even matter, as long as it's real. Unfortunate, but it happens and those people/places exist.
I know this sounds ridiculous, but look at WWII - happened everywhere.

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Deleted on Jun 29, 2014 17:40:03 GMT 1, Of course. But these are prints. Not ireplaclable originals from someone dead by long? Yeah, so probably a low-level criminal who can't afford to fund a museum-level art heist, but wants a Banksy print on his wall so he throws guys a few hundred to steal one and bring it to him/her.
That's the only way I see it making sense - they wouldn't be able to make any substantial money on the print by selling it to anyone, since everyone would know it's stolen or think it's fake due to lack of provenance. The only way the theft makes sense really is if it was stolen for personal use (example, if you do the math, a $4,000 print at the time wouldn't get any more than $2,000 on the secondary market if it was stolen; if they were after $2,000 they would've taken other things probably).
Basically, IMO, someone saw the print in the house and wanted it for him/herself. That person paid people to break into the house and take it, and bring it to him/her, probably for a few hundred bucks. Really, the fact that it's a print is what makes me think it was for personal use, rather than black market resale or anything, since black market resale value for a stolen print like that, I imagine, would be less than the other valuables in the house that the person didn't steal.

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Poster Bob on Jul 7, 2014 23:10:16 GMT 1, You can easily pick up either of those for 5k and the most recent, and in my eyes, legitimate, ebay auction for a stop and search went for 7700. Sounds like a fair request to me.
