Banksy Stop and Search Print, by spirit on Apr 26, 2008 0:39:13 GMT 1, ruralhick won't agree on anything, that's his nature (or how he presents himself here at least), never a kind word to say on anything and never anything remotely agreeable, if he can help it, unless others are being as abusive as he is, in which case he mat be friendly. I wouldn't waste your time disagreeing with him, as he's totally unreasonable and won't be told he's not 100% right about the whole universe. Best to leave him to his devices and ignore him. Although I must admit his typing and grammar usually better than tonight. Maybe he is pi$$ed.
Thanks hc - I know what he's like but I like a good argument sometimes! and his argument that it's the only way simply doesn't stand up. It's A way. It probably even THE way 90% of the time - but it's never the ONLY way...

Ruralhick - I've made a very good living out of design for the last 12 years. I'm a Creative Director. I have a degree in Typography and Graphic Communication. Please don't lecture me with your clearly narrow minded view on design principles. Lesson 1 - Understand the rules Lesson 2 - Learn how to break them (well).

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by thetruth55 on Apr 26, 2008 0:45:30 GMT 1, okay, okay, okay....let's get some things straight....everyone here is a graphic designer...."thinks visually,"....is an expert.... or whatever...
in my opinion, a little color does this S&S image good.....you can bring out the gloves if you want with the egg blue....afterall, you don't think there were officers of the law back in Wizard of Oz land?...isn't the fact that the officer is wearing BLUE gloves a sign of the times? and isn't that what Banksy was trying to do here?......the POW description next to this piece sort of points towards that...the security-minded times.........so color is not all bad....maybe that is what is intended for this print in framing...
and besides....with all the white boxes and more and more white...isn't that a little too much negative space? that must be a basic RULE somewhere in graphic design/visually thinking school, right? Of course, as I stated, I missed that school.

Please don't rip it apart too much, because if what OTHERS think about MY taste is bad...I might not be able to stomach it and have to let mine go (frame and all) for 525 pounds.

you do talk some bollocks jboy.... what do you mean there is no such thing as negative space? it's only been written about in more essays by more world class designers than you've sold prints... Breathing space is what women in marketing call it...

My honest opinion thetruth is that the blue mount is a bit too overwhelming - too much of it. And I don't like rounded frame. But I applaud your effort to do something different.

my mentor was one of those world class designers you speak of and yes a negtive space solution is very overused and has become a cliche of itself.
infact, its the first thing that professionals think of and then bin as its usually shit.

er....isn't the negative space solution (white box/white mount) the one that you were championing??? I agree that the reductive method is overused. Pushing the thinking further, what alternative framing method would you suggest?

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by bullet on Apr 26, 2008 1:26:48 GMT 1, and negative space is something completely different to breathing space if you are going to be a wotsit about it, negative space, as you must know, is often used in tacky logos where an apple (for example) will appear in the counter of a letter for a logo for an apple. White space or breathing space is just white space.
god all those books about white space must be so interesting, designers dont read books - they get out.

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 26, 2008 1:28:38 GMT 1, what do you reckon hc - ruralhick and jboy have both gone very quiet!
I would never tar jboy with ruralhick's brush, that would be out of order imo. Jboy has turned me on to some cool art and is prepared to back up what he says with reason, whether I happen to agree with him or not. He def' has some positive input to contribute. I think he takes a bit of a bashing at times, although maybe if I'd been around longer my view would be different. Who knows? Ruralhick on the other hand, I must admit I've not yet read a positive comment about anything from him, which is a shame, as I'm sure there must be art he likes, or he wouldn't be on the forum. I suspect he has a nicer alter-ego hidden amongst the mass of usernames, as no-one can be such a total cvnt, surely!!!!

You contradict yourself. Origanally you said "there's no such thing as negative space, it's called breathing space". Now you say there is such a thing as negative space but it's different to breathing space" (which is fair enough). Although the term negative space can be applied to both layouts (where blank space balances objects on the page) as well as "cutouts" from logos etc.
You'll be surprised to hear designers do actually read books jboy, that's one way they learn how to be better designers. They go out as well though, the two activities are not mutually exclusive. reading books just helps you to talk less crap. You should try it.

Banksy Stop and Search Print, by graeme501 on Apr 26, 2008 1:48:50 GMT 1, i think that everyone has their own opinions on how best to frame a print, but art and taste is subjective, an eyesore for ruralhick is a delight to some1 else
obviously everyone here is proud of their own framing choice, thats why they chose to display the picture on the thread, so thats what really matters. the fact that some1 else calls it rubbish doesnt mean anything as they dont have to look at it everyday
its not a case of the priciples of design, its a case of personal taste and enjoyment

but surely when it comes to your own art, the only thing that matters is personal enjoyment and expression of taste ?

That's kind of what I've been saying Graeme. Don't take the "word of god" that the minimalist approach is the only way. Sure that works but why not be creative and think beyond that? It might not workout but equally you might come up with something amazing that beats the minimalist option. Whatever the result at least you can say it was your own vision and you can enjoy it all the more for that.
