Why are so many people selling thier Micallef's?, by spanksy on Jan 3, 2008 18:30:15 GMT 1, i cant believe the amount of Micallefs for sale atm. The are 20 of FPR's website auction saboteur alone and many people are trying to sell GIWTBB on the forum. Is this normal or has everyone fallen out of love with Mic's work? I personally love his work but am scared about buying now as the prices may drop even more... is this a normal trend for an artist who may have peaked already??

Why are so many people selling thier Micallef's?, by leumasdarnley on Jan 3, 2008 18:35:21 GMT 1, Well its edition size as well as the actual physical size its a no brainer if you like the artist to buy the print I mean @ 395 the print was 300 at release. He hasn't peaked he just flooded the market he is an amazing artist and prices will rebound in time.
As a reference I was happy to pay 1000 for mine after release as I figured it was my last chance to own a signed Micallef I was wrong but I feel the same demand is there just many more prints.

Spanksy, if you like his work then buy it mate. The prices at the moment are a bargain and I'd be amazed to see them drop further. Most, though not all, will be selling because they bought in order to make a killing and are shifting the pieces due to panic. Those that bought his work because they like it have got it hanging on their walls in a frame.

I love the size of it too it dominates the room although was expensive to frame.
I will never get rid of mine.

Why are so many people selling thier Micallef's?, by lesbianwednesdays on Jan 3, 2008 18:51:02 GMT 1, it's a double whammy, as those who bought for profit offload, those who are unsure as to whether they are gonna keep it long term are panicking too and getting rid before they perceive the market drops further. the demand is outstripped by supply even further so there can only be one result - further drops.
if i had the money to spend i'd be filling my boots, who cares if it dropped further or didn't increase much, you can get some of the eyestorm 95 editions for about a grand!!! not 21stCL, obviously. i have a JD for sale as i don't want to put it up and will wait and see how things go, i've also got a shibuya crossing that won't go anywhere unless my finances take a real nosedive.
in fact i'd like to be able to pick up a few bits so long may the lull continue! go with your gut mate.

Why are so many people selling thier Micallef's?, by loucastel on Jan 3, 2008 19:53:14 GMT 1, Prices aside, i think the best thing mr Micallef could do at the moment apart from releasing no more prints ,would be to take a year or two off, retreat to his studio, work on some new stuff and come back bigger and better than ever. If laz keeps churning out prints, Anthony's career in the main stream will be over before he has reached anywhere near his peak. As for prices (not that it matters) again if Laz keep flooding the market his prices will plummet, good news for the collector, not so good if you want them for an investment, then they will never recover. Anthony was stunned at his sudden rise to fame, That was not the way he wanted to go.

Why are so many people selling thier Micallef's?, by bobbymeachamjr on Jan 3, 2008 19:59:24 GMT 1, the 1600 Laz flooded the market with @2000 usd a piece f*ucked up the whole market - not just a downer for micallef. People way over extended themselves thinking that prices can only go up - even at that overpriced price point. Once this was not the case things have been on a freefall. Lets just say the 1600 was a catalyst and at the very least screwed owners of the older micallefs...

Why are so many people selling thier Micallef's?, by timebomb on Jan 3, 2008 20:03:11 GMT 1, in my opinion laz is riding on the wave of the "sell out" phenomenon, and thinks he has a guaranteed sell out no matter what he does and to what artist, it is a real shame for Anthony, but his work does deserve the attention, I hope it gets managed right, I treasure early works I got.

Agree its shame, Too many prints, too much hype on here and other places for his show in LA
Will he recover?
Time will tell
I'd still like tokyo girl and friendly fire though to go with my other Mic bits :-)

Why are so many people selling thier Micallef's?, by jam on Jan 3, 2008 20:20:30 GMT 1, People who were in Micallef strictly as an investment started panic selling when prices fluctuated downward. AM wanted to drive prices down some so they could get into the hands of fans, so he releases tons of prints for his LA show. This began the over saturation of the market for his work and prices went south. It was perpetuated by time of year and many 'investors' not taking the factor of less money being available to spend on art as is always the case around Christmas and how that was sure to effect prices across the board. This brings us to a point where prices are low enough that most anyone who wants Micallef can buy his prints at reasonable prices and availability. Now that we are through the holiday spending drought, people will open back up to spend on art again, and just in time to see sweet deals on Micallef prints and a fair amount of them on the market. As they clear out the market and prints are firmly in the hands of collectors, prices will rise again and perhaps be stronger as only true fans will have his stuff and likely not be swayed to sell to make a few quid. Longterm, this rollercoaster with Micallef's prints will appear as we well planned and well executed altering of his market.

Don't agree at all, if he wanted his fans to have his work at affordable prices then release a print run of 10,000 at ยฃ50 each. The price of his original's have suffered also and I can't imagine he wanted that. The ones at Newcastle would have sold in a second before the LA show. And thats because 4 x 400 not very good images were released at far too high a price combined with another 1000 prints from POW (although it's a very good image), combined with an over hyped show that did not live up to expectation and again was over priced and did not sell out, throw in some very bad PR and the whole thing collapses. The oversized snooker trophys didn't help either.
But Micallef is a talented artist and I think his charcoal work is superb and i can see them rising steadily. Both prints and originals.

Waaaaay too naive and maybe delusional thinking. If he wanted to "drive" down prices so that more people can get them then why release 1600 @2000 usd? 10000 @200 would be a somewhat better argument. In any case, the chance that Laz and Micallef were applying your theory is zero to none. It was a money grab. Simple as that.

Why are so many people selling thier Micallef's?, by loucastel on Jan 3, 2008 20:55:04 GMT 1, Agree with a lot that frankie said, but a lot of the images that he has produced are very weak, seem rushed somehow. A friend of mine owns a gallery in Devon and when 21st century and dirty delux came out he had them and raved about them, could have bought them for ยฃ400 or so, did nothing for me then and still dont, the charcoal heads he did were at best ok, his strongest pieces for me would be girl in red dress and we come in peace, but even the prices of those have plumeted from there high of not so long ago the poor guy has been overhyped and oversold. once the prices of an artist have become depressed the chances of them going back up are pretty remote, even the prices of his originals have come down. What the future holds for the guy, who's to know ,but lets hope it's good, there's a lot of talent there.
