Micallef 2.0..., by stereoface on Jan 22, 2008 18:04:09 GMT 1, I agree that is is AM 2.0. I dont mind having a similar style or using an established artist as an influence. But, it looks like a cross of the AM's Girl in the Red Dress With Nike Trainers and another of his prints. It is just too close for my taste.

Micallef 2.0..., by Harveyn on Jan 22, 2008 19:41:48 GMT 1, Have to agree that the guy has talent but looks like he has spent a little two much time concentrating his style around Mica. I do like it better than his previous stuff and I think if you pull two or three of the pieces out in isolation then I think the reaction would be different. I would say RBK the comment garbage is a bit strong but different opinions are what makes the world go round.

No doubt about his being talented, after all he's still the one with the brush in his hand and ultimately the one who turns out the finished product and as such there's absolutely nothing wrong with having (or adopting) a similar style to Micallef either, but I'd draw the line at using practically the same components of composition though.
Looking at the images on the other site (his older stuff?) I can't help thinking I've seen the one of the cow somewhere before too, either it was the same one or I'm just recalling a cow that might have looked at me like that once. They're actually pretty good IMO.

Nah I haven't pulled the trigger on any of his work....YET , but I've definitely got my eye on one of his pieces.
This kind of reminds me of the Banksy/Dolk comparisons. When Dolk first came out, he got slaughtered for being to similar to Banksy, but I think all artist from Hirst to my Brother Benji steal/borrow/copy from one another at some point in their careers e.g. Dface who has "borrowed", from many an artist over the years, got amped when the Chapman Brothers "borrowed" his idea for the frieze exhibition.

Micallef 2.0..., by sm on Jan 22, 2008 21:42:37 GMT 1, I think Thomas is a really talented artist but the similarities to Micallef are just to strong. That aside, some really nice pieces and unbeatable prices, some of the portraits are really strong. Imagine we'll see alot more of this artist.

Micallef 2.0..., by a4mnt on Jan 22, 2008 21:49:31 GMT 1, I just don't understand why he has to blatantly copy key elements of Micallef's work, the inward facing feet, the markings on the dress, the angel wings, the dirty deluxe love heart. If this was music, he would be getting sued.
The only thing I can imagine he wishes to gain is notoriety and exposure. And to be honest, I find the style very immature.
If plagerism is such an easy trap too fall into, why are there so many good, original artists out there, even in our small sphere of interest.

Everything you say is so true! Good to see you back also crackawacka.
"Good artists copy. Great artists steal" - Pablo Picasso
This guy 'attempted' to copy - and did a piss poor job at that.

Point taken CW, AM is such a unique talent, its a bit like the sheep and Shepard mentality, Where AM leads many artists are following at the moment his formula has been so successful, its no wonder other artists choose to swagger jack his style.

Hmm... the one on the far right (girl with a pig's head) says it's oil on canvas despite it being in the paper section... I'm starting to get a headache cos of that site now.
