Banksy • Flag GOLD, by graeme501 on Oct 27, 2008 19:52:58 GMT 1, somebody on the forum helped with some costs and i put a bid in on their behalf, which i won and then delivered it to them nickodey - im an art student, so im in full time study, not that its any of ur business, but since u seem so interested in me, i thought u'd like to know, once again, i am making no money, only in the 'value' of the art if anyone is interested why nickodey doesnt like me, he went to bethlehem and bought the micallef original rainbow kid, u might remember it advertised on flithymodernart in the weeks after the ghetto, or again in the 1st auction that came up after it, sadly he didnt make as much money as he thought and i made fun of him, but i'll ignore him now, as im fairly bored of his slagging me off, or sending friendly pm's threatening to knock my f**king teeth out lovely guy LOL....so you dont ACTUALLY have a job then
nope, im a student, i was only 19 at the time, thats why i needed the guy to help me with the fee's, not because i wanted extra money, because i couldnt afford to go otherwise, after i came back, i sold a few prints and saved christmas money to pay for the flag

Not half! There are some other students in here with some serious treasures and all!
Graeme, that photo you posted of the Ghetto's shop front, the painting to the right in the window... That has to be one of my all time favourite pieces! Can you remember whether they were selling it or just exhibiting? (out of curiosity only of course) I remember there was quite a story to it, I think it was a Palestinian artist's reworking of an original piece, which had gone bye bye with one of Saddam's palaces being bombed, if I'm not mistaken...? Seriously beautiful painting!

It was Souleiman Mansour's oil on canvas Jamal Al Mahamel. It was for sale with a guide price of $500k.

the piece in the window was indeed souleiman mansour's jamal al mahamel, but according to the price list, the guide price is $500,000, unfortunatly, if i remember correctly, it wasnt the actual canvas, just a gilcee print of the image on canvas for display, just like the banksy's - im guessing this was due to the value of the words in the window and no security

Banksy • Flag GOLD, by graeme501 on Oct 28, 2008 17:35:24 GMT 1, recently this year i have been making the switch for prints and originals, i really like my gold flag, but if i could swap it for an original by one of my favourite artists, i would be up for that, so if u have an original by the following artists, and fancy a change, get in touch lucy mclauchlan dface herakut matt small os gemeos david choe conor harrington kaws obviously with some of the artists, it would be a small piece, watercolour, sketch ect and with others it would be decent sized canvases and stuff like that, for the right piece, i have other stuff to add the gold flag is in my name, and has been framed by mr.frameman in a black box frame with a black mount to his usual standards, however the gold flag is not for sale so please dont ask
had a few offers, but the search goes on, i forgot to add barry mcgee to the list of artists i would like, would be interested in works by him aswell

The Banksy canvases in the shop were indeed digital prints on canvas. Printed locally in Palestine, so again well done to Banksy and his team for keeping proceeds going into the right pot.

Banksy • Flag GOLD, by baznyc on Nov 18, 2008 21:56:16 GMT 1, You should keep this it's a very collectable piece.
Interesting point.
Should he keep the work just because it is collectable? or should the work be retained because to lose it would create an artistic void that couldn't easily be filled?
I ask because it doesn't seem a good enough reason to keep a print purely because its collectable - unless of course you happen to be an invester, purely motivated by financial gain.
Much better to keep the print if you love it, but if not sell it and buy something else that will hold your attention.
As for the moral issue of selling the thing, I'm not sure that this is quite so big a deal. Banksy released the print knowing that it would be an added insentive for people to make the trip to Palestine, so that people would see it with their own eyes and therefore draw their own conclusions on the place. Well the print served its purpose in that sense so if 11 months later it is to be used for collateral to buy another piece of art, where's the big problem.
Perhaps a donation to the kids charity over there would be nice though?

Banksy • Flag GOLD, by graeme501 on Nov 18, 2008 22:25:16 GMT 1, a donation to the kids charity is a great idea , like i said, the price is based purely on what the new possible piece of art costs, but im sure i could doante a few hundred as a thank you
i have another piece from bethlehem which i love, but for some reason i feel the gold flag doesnt do it for me as much, and when i look at it now, i think, its nice, but i could instead i could have something else that i love, selling it wouldnt take away the memories of bethlehem, as i didnt go for this print, it was just an added bonus

Not sure I fully understand you. Do you mean Graeme's collecting is motivated by financial gain or your motives for collecting are based on gain? I ask because surely you don't mean everyones motivation in collecting art is based on this criterion?
