Mr Brainwash Solo Show, by Daniel Silk on Jun 18, 2008 22:01:52 GMT 1, www.mediabistro.com/unbeige/exhibitions/life_is_beautiful_assures_mr_brainwash_87381.asp
Life Is Beautiful, Assures Mr. Brainwash
To Banksy, he's "a force of nature" and "a phenomenon. And I don't mean that in a good way." Shephard Fairey describes him "an enigma," albeit an "infuriating" one. His passport reads Thierry Guetta, but he prefers "Mr. Brainwash," MBW for short. Whatever you call him, tonight he unleashes his graffiti-style, pop culture-saturated creations on Los Angeles in his first exhibition, an affair that he is staging himself in a former CBS studio complex on Sunset Boulevard. He has long been ready for his close-up.
Entitled "Life is Beautiful," the sprawling show promises paintings, sculptures, and prints (200 will be handed out free to first comers), as well as an installation made from 100,000 shoes and an outsized recreation of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" (who frankly, we always suspected of having kicked off their shoes beneath that starkly appointed bar). Writer Shelley Leopold, who brilliantly describes the makeshift gallery space as "the faded mocha edifice that until last year housed CBS's Columbia Square studios," recently got up close and personal with MBW for an LA Weekly cover story that touches on how he went from making a documentary about street artists such as Banksy and Fairey to wielding the wheat paste for himself. "The film, meanwhile, remains unfinished," notes Leopold, while "Banksy...is threatening to do a movie about the documentary Guetta never made."
As for the "Nighthawks" homage, it remained a work in progress when Leopold visited and may tonight take the form of a pop art-infiltrated tabluau vivant. "I was going to put skeletons in there dressed as the original characters, but that's too negative," Guetta said. "I'm a positive guy! Life is beautiful. So my idea is changing again. Maybe I'll get actors to dress up as Warhol and stand in there, or maybe I'll break the window and make it an abandoned buildingโlike modern times!"

Mr Brainwash Solo Show, by Matt-lock on Jun 19, 2008 7:13:58 GMT 1, nice summary jon. I just got back home from the show and it was pretty interesting. There were an INSANE amount of people...never seen anything like it. People were bumrushing the doors and the table to get one of the 200 S/N free prints. It was a nice setting in the warehouse and with all the installation but completely agree that it was all over the place. The man thinks big that's for sure. But I think he needs to have some more original ideas. There was a piece exact to Blek's Space Cowboy but instead of Blek's face it was Elvis...really annoyed me.

Funny story about that, that image was done by Warhol then Blek took that image replaced his face with Elvis's.
Anyways I was very disappointed with the work from the show and the price point of the pieces. Everything was taken from an idea already done, I guess that was the BIG concept of the show but I think when broken down it failed over all and just seemed like a joke. I believe this was his first show and other then pasters randomly in the streets I don't think he has done any other work, so to ask that much for his work is ridiculous. Also this was a hype machine at work, who ever did the publicity for this show did an amazing job, too bad Banksy did better here with very little promotion. It would have been nice to see some original idea or work from MBW so at least I could feel like he deserves this credit for this show, but honestly I came out of the show with a general dis-taste for many aspects of the show.

Mr Brainwash Solo Show, by raiden on Jun 20, 2008 3:26:24 GMT 1, I went. The line to get in at one point must have been four hours, but the space was huge! Unbelievably overwhelming show, but everyone is right, overwhelming in size, scope, execution, promotion, etc. underwhelming in terms of art concepts.
Let me say this to his defense. There was a lot of good work there, but not enough purely original work, save for the installation pieces. (but lets face it, its very, very hard to be utterly original anymore)
Several pieces were essentially rip off of other works. Rene Gagnon I believe did the Campbell's Graffitti can before MBW, and I'm pretty sure someone did it before Rene (but please correct me who came first)
Stylistically, MBW seemed the emulator more often than originator of concepts, though I dug his Muhammad Ali boxing screenprint in which the sweat coming off the punch is dribbled paint - similar to what Nick Walker's been doing with dribble effect.
Lots of tired art retreads. He made Marilyn Monroe's of practically every star he could get his hand on (yawn) There must have been at least 30 in all, I couldn't even count them all.
One thing's for sure, this show drummed up massive interest. Opening night saw a line of at least 3,000 (there were minimum 1,000 people in line by the time the show opened) Based on the length of the line, which span basically 3 long Hollywood blocks snaking into the parking lot, the final number of those in must have been 5,000.
This was a Mega art event. And honestly, I have never seen this many pieces by a living artist in one place ever. I can't even venture a count. There were more pieces in this place than any floor of the MOMA and probably double than the current showing at the LA's MOCA (main building) and the Guggenheim while its undergoing renovation. That's not hyperbole.
It spanned two stories, two giant warehouse rooms, plus a long hallway, plus 10+ smaller rooms off the side, plus a courtyard.
Honestly, I've never left a show so overwhelmed - it was almost uncomfortable.
Yes, most art critiques in the know came away under impressed by most of the work... BUT The tragedy is how many kids in line didn't know who Banksy even is Yes, you heard me correctly. MBW mass marketed this event so huge that it brought out thousands of people with zero knowledge of the art world, who all came away with an impression that MBW is the shit.
Take that for what its worth, but I saw the rush of buyers, and these were not people in the know. These were Los Angeles rich kids who thought they discovered someone amazing, but seem fairly naive to the broader art world.
Fact is, we LA kids don't know where the fuck Bristol even is!
It will be interesting to see if this phenomenal art stunt by MBW will substantially elevate his critical recognition in the weeks and months to come, but after getting the cover of the LA Weekly, making local news, and having an art opening that I think beat Banksy's in attendance, MBW is now in the top five most recognized names in LA for street / urban art (probably among all artists worldwide - scary thought eh?)
Face it, art, particularly graf art, is very regional...
If I had to surmise artist name recognition among LA scene kids, it would go:
Banksy Shepard Fairy Mark Ryden Murakami (fresh off his huge LACMA show) MBW DFace (This one I'm not sure about, because I think MBW overtook D*Face for LA street cred and recognition with this show among scene kids) Space Invader Nick Walker (that might even be pushing it) Camille Rose Garcia Gary Baseman Ron English Buff Monster (His tags and wheat pasters up till last year were extremely visible)

Mr Brainwash Solo Show, by quicksnap on Jun 20, 2008 7:43:20 GMT 1, well, i thought the show was pretty overwhelming in a good way. the installations were incredible. his influences are definately apparent in the pieces but there were quite a few i really liked. I feel like prices were a bit high for prints, but no worse than POW and the editions all seemed to be 15.
On a positive note, I got an extra set of post cards to give away here on the board. I am just looking for some ideas on a good way to go about it. Nothing complicated, I was thinking of starting a thread and having everyone interested pick a number between 1 and 1000 and then use a random nuymber generator. any ideas are welcome. i think its like 7 or 8 postcards in the set.

Terry is a super great guy, and he is well intentioned. But for alot of us, I think it missed the mark, which ultimately is the important part.
