Mr. Brainwash • Guitar Hero Print, by sfdoddsy on Nov 29, 2008 14:44:09 GMT 1, People keep stating that his stuff is selling out super fast, even at the rather high prices.
I can't help wondering if this in fact true. It's a great way to hype yourself by displaying sold out signs on all your work.
I note that some of the 'Sold Out' stuff appears to still be available at www.guyhepner.com/collections/8
In any case his work is so bad any popularity (if real) is yet another sign that 'street art' is not about talent, originality or any of the other qualities that typify real art.
And that the apocalypse is nigh.

Mr. Brainwash • Guitar Hero Print, by ben on Nov 29, 2008 16:47:09 GMT 1, I like his stuff. In fact I've bought a few of his prints. They don't seem that expensive to me. What does seem expensive is Banksy's Nola going for £3000.00. Doesn't mean I wouldn't have bought one when it was release but that would have been speculative.
People seem to be real excited here about whether people should or shouldn't like Mr BW's work. Who's to say what one person likes and what one doesn't. My point being, if you like it, buy it, if you don't then don't. Is he bansky or an artists collective? I don't know and I'd put money on the fact that nobody else here does either. But thats not the point is it. Its just art.
Just my opinion

I agree, with the exception of Shep. LA doesnt deserve shep.
MBW is perfect, and I mean perfect for Los Angeles. All glittery on the outside, zero substance on the inside, and living off the notion that perception is reality. Pretend a print run is sold out giving you others the perception your work is wanted yet you've got a stack of prints and unpaid bills in a back room somewhere.
Sorry, the majority of his works are pretty mediocre. I like the Obama image but even most of those on ebay are unsold. He ripped off gagnon's soup spray cans, he's ripped of Banksys Kate, he's not Banksy, he's just a biter.

PUT your $$$$ where your mouth is NEWBIE, cause I bet you $500 that their is more than a few ppl on here that KNOW FOR A FACT that he is not BANKSY. This isn't EXP BEANS with a bunch of rock poster collectors blabbing off at the mouth like they do over there. Unlike EB, Their are legitimate collectors of all genres of art on this forum, including the artist themselves that work hand in hand with Banksy. MBW is not Mr.B

I'll be money you didn't even know who banksy was when I first joined this board. Many posts doesn't make you an expert, just someone with a very sheltered social life. Just my opinion.
You personify what I was saying about people getting excited about whether one should like Mr BW or not. Its only art, or it should be.
But what do I know? Probably about as much as you...

Mr. Brainwash • Guitar Hero Print, by raiden on Nov 29, 2008 23:29:45 GMT 1, First, LA has a much better art scene than everyone makes it out, but thanks to 5 or so amazing galleries in LA, there have been few artists on this board who haven't had a fairly recent show in LA. (last two years)
Actually Evil, I thought you lived in LA just long enough that we could claim you! Either way, 10 years in California? I think we hand out native status to anyone who hangs around that long. Nevertheless, at least you made the streets pretty...
Actually, LA has Shepard Fairey, Dave Kinsey, Ripper 1331, Buff Monster, DMote, Skullphone, David Choe (LA boarn and raised), Logan Hicks (who only recently moved to NY) and a ton of Pop Surrealists: Mark Ryden, Gary Baseman, Audrey Kawasaki, Camille Rose Garcia, Shag, Jeff Soto, Donny Miller, and then a good deal of rock poster aritsts, including Emek, who initially lived in LA and started his career here, then moved to Portland. (To name a few) Shepard is our biggest street artist.
MBW is just some crazy Frenchman.

Mr. Brainwash • Guitar Hero Print, by twist65 on Dec 1, 2008 0:40:19 GMT 1, yup raiden seems to nail it for me too... The great thing about hype is that it doesn't last long... If MBW is indeed a true artist of the urban variety lets see how his work stands the test of time. I'm sure Nick Walkers work will be collectable for a long time to come, despite what current prices and vogue suggests - basically because he is a genuinely talented artist and in it for the long haul. And why does everyone think that a cheap play on words constitutes a legitimate piece of fairly expensive art? Viz makes me chuckle and costs about 2 quid...

Mr. Brainwash • Guitar Hero Print, by raiden on Dec 2, 2008 22:38:57 GMT 1, No, the San Jose comment was about David Choe... Lets not confuse MBW fans anymore. I assume Choe was LA because he was born and raised here, he had his first solo show was here, and he did street pieces here. I know that I've often seen Choe listed as from unknown and be a bit cryptic about what city he labels himself with, unlike other artists where its more clear. I think a beter case can be made for Choe being an LA artist than anywhere else, especially because his work has a strong pop-surrealist, LA aesthetic to it.
I will say this much about MBW, he's prints are high quality from what I've seen. The cynic in me wants to say its because he spends that way, but I shouldn't be bashing MBW so much - I really don't hate MBW as much as I think he's overvalued in all ways, both in public consciousness and in prices. He really is a nice guy and I do salute him for 1) having the balls to put down the camera and pursue his dream to be a street artist 2) legitimately caring about his public - albeit partly because he seems a little fame obsessed. The main thing I resent, but in a sense envy, is that he is more or less buying his way into being a street artists - which I don't have a problem in and of itself, just so long as everyone on board his bandwagon realizes the criticisms of MBW.
