Banksy Donuts Print, by Rude Copper on Jul 25, 2009 23:46:54 GMT 1, ok, i get it, its a funny joke, not particlarly deep or difficult to decipher, but a great print?, one that you'd want to put on your wall?, i dont think so, i am amazed that there has not been a glut of disparaging remarks about this, because it is very lame, the kind of cartoon you might see in a broadsheet, thats all. i'm in the process of buying an earlier print that i consider to be classic banksy, and comparing that to this , i cant help thinking, is that it, show over?

Maybe not the best print he has put out. But show over? If the Bristol show is anything to go by the answer is no.

Absolutely - If we had to queue for over two hours, on a week day, a month (or so) after the show opened, suggests to me that the show is not over. c

Completely agree. A very weak print indeed. In the past, Banksy themes have covered the loss of innocence, Britain becoming a police state and the ridiculous rise of consumerism.
This one basically says that American cops like donuts.
I'd put the cash towards an earlier print that actually says something - unsigned or not.

Banksy Donuts Print, by Heavyconsumer on Jul 26, 2009 3:34:01 GMT 1, I won't be going for this print myself, as I don't especially like it and wouldn't want it on the wall, but to start suggesting the man's washed up is preposterous considering the broad-reaching interest generated by his show imo. How many other living artists could draw so many people to an art show in the UK? Some people don't like that street art has become so mainstream and I can understand why that may be, but I'm glad for it. More artists can make a living doing what they love and get their messages heard, plus we get to enjoy more art in more forms as a result.
As I say, I'm not massively into this image. It looks well suited to the medium but really doesn't speak to me at all. I find it lacking in substance compared to most of his previous prints, which have usually shown a more thoughtful side to him. Nothing wrong with a bit of light-hearted fun of course though.

Banksy Donuts Print, by tuumi on Jul 26, 2009 5:43:37 GMT 1, I don't see how multiple entries are possible. Getting multiple email addresses is easy but you can only have one name on your credit card. The name you enter will have to match the name on your cc. Enter your name multiple you own name multiple times in the drawing and it will be deleted. Yeah you can enter you mom dad sister friends. But ultimately that is one name per person and is fair enough.
Don't see what the fuss is about. Excellent way to sell prints.

With you there.
Is he washed up? Ridiculous.
Is he, perhaps, losing direction just a little? Possibly.
Banksy's in a unique position to comment on what's going on - even if they are very broad brushstrokes indeed. We've got a major war happening, complete lack of faith in the government, global warming and a possible billion plus infected with a potentially lethal flu. There's plenty to work with - so why the donuts, unless we're all missing something incredibly profound.
(Well, I guess monkey parliament is pretty topical.)

Banksy Donuts Print, by sand on Jul 26, 2009 7:58:07 GMT 1, I think itยดs a great image and if by a miracle I manage to win one in the lottery...I will happily hang it on my wall.
In terms of a Banksy image having to have a deep political and significant meaning...I donยดt agree. This is classic Banksy humour and executed perfectly. It makes me smile every time I look at it and I guess thatยดs the most important thing.
Or if youยดre looking for a deeper message...how about the idea itยดs about the police having misplaced priorities and instead of doing basic policing they waste their time on trivial matters such as spending hour after hour completing red tape [or in this case protecting their own interests...symbolised by the doughnut].
Or if you want to go even deeper...what does the doughnut represent? How about the American dream? From the outside itยดs sugar coated and alluring. But somewhat flawed with a massive hole in it and needs to be protected from attack [perhaps foreign].
I like the fact that you can read into the image as much as you want...rather than having the message rammed home..
I hope all the people who donยดt like the image wonยดt be entering the lottery...but I doubt that.
Fingers crossed iยดll finally get lucky....but I also doubt that!
Best of luck to everyone...hopefully a lot of forum members will end up with one.

Banksy Donuts Print, by monkeyballs on Jul 26, 2009 10:10:55 GMT 1, Aimed at America, presented safely in Bristol, but is the image half the story. Donuts for them, Ice cream for us..... Maybe the donut represents America's continual ability to protect their way of life through force and strength, whilst the knackered Ice cream van shows Britain's inability as a society undone and broken.
America in my lifetime has been the empire on the planet, like Britain before, perhaps the fact that the cops are old is suggestive as America looks far more vulnerable now than ever before in my life of 30+ years, maybe they need to get with the times and embrace global values or all they'll be protecting is effectively a long since rotten donut, just like Britains ice cream van.

Banksy Donuts Print, by monkeyballs on Jul 26, 2009 10:52:09 GMT 1, IMO its a bit more simple the cops look like a motorcade protecting the president. Although the doughnut can be different flavors and "colours" those are just on the outside and regardless of that in the inside still basically a doughnut. It doesn't necessarily have to be the US but considering the recent election and the available flavors seems a bit suspicious
