Ian Francis ๐ฌ๐ง Bristol Artist โข New Paintings โข For Sale, by Deleted on Oct 6, 2007 23:21:15 GMT 1, IMO there are two many "Next best things" There can only be a few in a decade. Granted there are some amazing artists out there, Ian being one, but how does he stand out from the others? Im not sure he does at the moment. IMO of course. A valid point Ant. Already this year we've had Dan Baldwin, Guy Denning, Ian Francis and one or two others quoted as the next big thing Perhaps a mixture of over enthusiasm, along with gallery hype, but I totally agree that you only get so many in a decade, not bucketloads per year. More of an argument for Adam Neate however
I wouldn't say that the excitment over Guy Denning was to do with over enthusiasm or gallery hype. For a start, no galleries got involved and the enthusium was created by people on this forum. Was the enthusiasm to do with him being the next big thing? I don't think so. I think he is a very talented artist that struck a cord with many on this forum. In this overpriced print culture of ours, the originals seemed quite cheap hence they sold very quickly.
I know I didn't think once about 'next big thing' when I bought my Denning. I bought purely on quality.

I know you bought GD for reasons of quality, but not everyone else did. There are plenty of cases where people bought the artists that I mentioned for reasons of profit, and enthusiasm which was assisted by hype. That is why the secondary market exists.

Ian Francis ๐ฌ๐ง Bristol Artist โข New Paintings โข For Sale, by shavemysoul on Oct 6, 2007 23:47:43 GMT 1, I'm glad there are people who don't buy when they're not sure if they def. do like the work or not. Like Stuey said, there are a lot of purchases off the back of hype. I agree that Guy Denning is talented. But few of his pieces do it for me and hence I don't own any of his work.
I love Ian's work. I bet it's not plenty of people's cup of tea... and I'm glad. Means some of us who like Ian's work get a better chance to buy his prints when not all are bought off the back of hype.
Aside from getting the credit Ian deserves, I don't think fans of Ian's into his work genuinely will be too bothered about the value of the work. It might not add $$$ to their collections value, but at the same time it means the work stays accessible for longer. And surely that's what's at the heart of it... the work itself.

I buy most of my art on impulse/looks alone, I do admit however I seem to be swayed by views on these boards from time to time. I love Ian Francis's work and would love that death star print but how can we keep justifying paying over 1k on every print from the second hand market due to the hype of every talented artist, surely something has to give soon.

reminds me of Micallef's japan-inspired series. Twisted innocence (maxed out)

Ian Francis ๐ฌ๐ง Bristol Artist โข New Paintings โข For Sale, by absyrd on Oct 8, 2007 18:21:43 GMT 1, Here is mine framed up if you haven't seen it yet.
I like it better than my Micallefs. And I also love the "mystery" or whatever you call it in all of his stuff. If you haven't seen this image close, the girl is wearing torn-up fishnets and has a scraped knee. Wonder what her job may be... and what she has been through...

Ian Francis ๐ฌ๐ง Bristol Artist โข New Paintings โข For Sale, by Filipino Box Spring Hog on Oct 8, 2007 18:28:40 GMT 1, Georgeous print and good frame up!
I think Ian's work is better than most - yes, better than Micallef as well. I know that will piss a lot of people off but, ah well. Just my opinion. Who knows if he is the next best thing or not...but, in my book, he is a completely solid artist with infinite potential.

I think you will get people that will argue against your point. However, who gives a toss. It's such a pointless argument, they are both talented artists with different styles and different themes, so why bother to compare them.

I simply just gravitate toward the Francis with my morning cup of coffee rather than my Micallefs. It may just be like I like purty colors or that my house is slanted that way.

Ian Francis ๐ฌ๐ง Bristol Artist โข New Paintings โข For Sale, by verbalkint on Oct 9, 2007 1:09:12 GMT 1, i got an ian francis original on the way. I commissioned it from him. Apparantly he is only doing 2 before starting work on his next LA show in september. I was asked what i wanted and i told him that i wanted whatever he wanted to paint, apparantly he really appreciated the fact that i was happy to leave it up to him and not say 'i want one like death star explodes' etc. I am more exited about this than any other piece of art i have bought, it should be here within 3 weeks so i will post pictures when it arrives

Ian Francis ๐ฌ๐ง Bristol Artist โข New Paintings โข For Sale, by Chuck D on Oct 8, 2007 3:46:17 GMT 1, I know this is a long shot but...I'm looking to add a great Neate, Parla and /or Francis to my collection. Preferably from Elms or BLK/MRKT. Do any of you have one that you're willing to part with?
I have no idea what the current market is demanding for these artists. Can any of you give me an indication what I should be expecting to shell out? I really appreciate it.

Ian Francis ๐ฌ๐ง Bristol Artist โข New Paintings โข For Sale, by justinkase on Oct 8, 2007 6:38:48 GMT 1, The Neates at Elms were 25-30 GBP's. Don't know what they're selling for now tho.
You still might be able to get a Parla watercolor for a decent price. There's currently one on ebay. As far as his canvases...I'm sure they are quite pricey.
And the Francis canvases from BLK/MRKT were anywhere from 6-15K US at the last show. I'm sure they've bumped up a bit since then.
I like your taste Chuck. Hope this helps. Good luck with your search.
