Ian Francis π¬π§ Bristol Artist β’ New Paintings β’ For Sale, by wiz on Oct 31, 2008 19:47:54 GMT 1, Is that 10k USD or GBP?. Man sits quietly on chair staring blankly at screen pondering on what could have been if he had said yes instead of no.

Ian Francis π¬π§ Bristol Artist β’ New Paintings β’ For Sale, by alsbabar on Oct 31, 2008 19:56:55 GMT 1, not to begrudge anyone for selling a piece, but i find i am instantly turned off when people who are selling their art, they think they can ask auction prices - its like people who sell their banksy prints, citing andipa prices, its not relative.
If you want auction money - then whack in to an auction - you might get close to the 10K it reached at Bonham, i doubt it, but you never know.

thats my point Β£5K at gallery - on here, you should see prices below gallery - so Β£4K is a realistic price

With respect that's not a very sound argument Als. What about all the other art that sells out instantly from galleries? How much of it is available retrospectively for less (in this scene anyway). Think Banksy prints, or for that matter, anything Parla, Walker, Dface and many others (prints, originals, take your pick).

Ian Francis π¬π§ Bristol Artist β’ New Paintings β’ For Sale, by solar77 on Oct 31, 2008 20:32:02 GMT 1, This is silly. I'd rather have the opportunity to purchase quality art on the boards than have to fight it out with the crowd at Bonhams. Why would you try to push sellers away from a place where you have a much better chance of actually being able to buy successfully?
Why would the seller come on here and ask less than gallery prices when the artist's work is publically selling for significantly more than gallery prices elsewhere? This defies all common sense and logic.
I wish he was asking gallery price for the piece. It would have been mine as soon as he posted this thread.

Ian Francis π¬π§ Bristol Artist β’ New Paintings β’ For Sale, by alsbabar on Oct 31, 2008 20:33:59 GMT 1, thats ok HC, its a debate, and everything discussed is with respect. i wouldn't put Ian Francis in the same brackets as Banksy. Walker, and Dface are also on a different level, however after about a month or two, you tend to see their prices level or come off a little. Dont get me wrong I like Ian's stuff, but he is not a 10K per canvas artist yet. Miranda Donovan sold out pre-show, as did Conor H., with the exception of a few pieces, most are still around the gallery prices they sold for, and what about Herakut, pieces are very difficult to come by, but their pricing is realistic. I would put Ian Francis in the same brackets as Charming Baker and Sage Vaughn.
As for Parla - after the last show, very overpriced imo
Let me add if you had Β£10K spare, would you spend it on a Ian Francis?

Ian Francis π¬π§ Bristol Artist β’ New Paintings β’ For Sale, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 31, 2008 20:52:31 GMT 1, I'd go for Ian's work well before considering anything by Walker or Dface most of the time, because I think he's twice the artist either of them are (of course all real life decisions are based on the actual piece, not only the artist, so there are exceptions I suppose, although I haven't seen many Dface images I really like at all thus far). However, my personal choice would likely not include any of the afformentioned. There are simply some artists I happen to prefer at the moment, but tastes evolve and change and I can see myself seeing Ian's work and being wowed enough to buy it, were I liquid enough to do so. (Tough to say for sure when you aren't in that position)

I find it staggering that people will spend hundreds on crap like the Green Lady where as IF prints struggle to sell.

Ian Francis π¬π§ Bristol Artist β’ New Paintings β’ For Sale, by gebeau31 on Oct 31, 2008 21:11:10 GMT 1, To be fair, that Laz piece is craptastic...and obviously not the piece he was referring to.
Also to be fair, the two KDF pieces that sold at $28k USD were also 49" x 71"...so three times as large as the piece offered here. Those two examples were also truly STUNNING. (This one is very nice, too...just saying...)

give arty's piece to a gallery to sell on consignment, he wont see 10K for it, a gallery will probably sell it for 8-10K, arty would see close to Β£4-5K for it - and i guess that is more my point - 10K on here is too steep. And without being pedantic - you are basing $16K on todays exchange rate, when it sold exchange rate was closer to $2 per Β£1

Ian Francis π¬π§ Bristol Artist β’ New Paintings β’ For Sale, by solar77 on Oct 31, 2008 21:20:48 GMT 1, A couple points:
There's a reason the Laz piece is still there for 10...it's awful. Not a good representation of the man's work.
There's a number of Ian Francis canvases I would spend 8-12K on right now given the opportunity; any of the 50x36" or larger pieces from the latest show, either of the larger pieces from Outsiders, Deathstar, Maria Ozawa and several others from the Super Coma Fantasy show.
I would buy any BLK/MRKT or KDF 40x30" Ian Francis for 6K without a second thought.
Edit: Als, I do agree that 10K is too agressive for this piece.

Ian Francis π¬π§ Bristol Artist β’ New Paintings β’ For Sale, by gebeau31 on Oct 31, 2008 21:28:55 GMT 1, what currency are we discussing?
Yes, the Outsiders piece sold at $16k USD...and it was twice as large (40" x 60") as the piece for sale here.
I would pay $10k - $12k USD for just about any of the KDF 28" x 40" IFs...but $12k is a far cry from $16k.
And yes, that LAZ piece on the website is HORRIBLE.
