Not me. In fact I consider it an enhancement rather than a defacement.
Now this is an eye opener:- It has been estimated that somewhere in the range of 2 to 3 million Chinese died as part of the centuries-long project of building the wall.
I reckon Jeff should paint a sitting boy for each one of these poor unfortunates.

Back from China, by Jef Aerosol on May 11, 2009 21:17:17 GMT 1, I only pasted up two "sitting kids"... it's paper and it will go away with the next rains and winds (if not cleaned off before)... I didn't mean to vandalize such a mighty site, but tried to act with as much respect as possible...

Back from China, by cpo on May 12, 2009 19:09:22 GMT 1, Hey jeff, I'm headed to China for 10 days this friday.. Could you please PM me the locations of some of those! I would love to take some pics of them while there.. do you still have an exhibit there as well? I would love the details! I doubt I'll find the one on the great wall, but for the others, we have a driver for the week at our disposal...

You could even paint a little red arrow going from the stick toward the butt

Ok, I'm not usually keen on explaining or expliciting my stuff, but I guess I need to now to answer your question.
I consider my street stencils as "stills" from the street life movie, if this makes any sense in english. This is the reason why my street pieces are life size characters. I often work on images that are cmore or less connected with the place I paint them in. Venice : Dirk bogarde in the movie "Death in Venice" Manhattan : Woody Allen, an Indian warrior, a broke trader... Lisbon : Fernando Pessoa, Amalia Rodrigues London : Syd Barrett, Sid Vicious, Joe Strummer Paris : Pierre Clementi, an accordion player, etc...
Of course, that doesn't prevent me from making some of my other characters travel round the world : The sitting kid, the old woman, the jumping flute player, etc...
In China, I worked on icons that show some different "ages" of china : Bruce Lee, who is a modern Chinese hero (even if his carreer developped abroad) is kinda kicking old Confucius away... The Chinese baby image is a reference to the rule of the unique child , the "king child", and it might also be a reference to the last emperor... The Panda : I just had to cut that stencil, as I went to chengdu and really wanted to visit the The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding . The species is really endangered, and the giant Panda is a very important symbol for all the Chengdu people, for chinese people in general an for the whole world too ! Now, you might find those pics "cliché'd", but all the chinese people who saw me work liked them and took them as my tribute to their culture, not as clichés. You should have sen how many posed for photos in front of the Panda, or Bruce Lee ! Besides, as you might have read on the chopsticks, i wrote "Art is food for thought", and if you read what the noodle-words say, you'll see that I quite avoided the cliché in that one. Among the chinese people I met in Beijing, several told me that such a pic could be hit by censorship. But I guess the context (contemporary art fair, etc...) sort of protected me. Hope this will help... Cheers

Back from China, by Jef Aerosol on May 15, 2009 0:07:11 GMT 1, oh, and th Erhu player ! I've always been very much into traditional music. As some of you may know, I used to play in an Irish traditional music band, for example (check website : distantshores.free.fr/ and also the duo I had before : jef.perroy.free.fr/openroad_story.htm) The Erhu is a fascinating instrument, we brought one back from singapore a few years ago, when we went on tour there with the band. And I loved that image of the old erhu player... For me, it's all but a cliché ! I met some Erhu players in china and they weren't clichés at all ! I just wanted to pay a tribute to the instrument and the ones who keep that tradition alive. The owner of a shop just by the grey wall I painted in Dashenzi (Beijing) loved the stencils so much, and especially the Erhu player, that he came out and gave me a present : a box with two chinese instruments (the chinese "ocarina") and that was so touching ! That was just the kind of moment you remember for your whole life, some intense human feelings, far from all clichés, believe me...
