Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by sham69 on Sept 3, 2008 10:45:19 GMT 1, Just received an invitation to the opening and have to say Ray and Brooklynite have set the benchmark for quality. Beautifully hand finished it puts most of the art being touted around here to shame.
Sadly, I can't be there but I'm sure it'll be a great show if the Bast one was anything to go by.
Good luck to Aiko and Brooklynite.
Anyone in the area be sure to check it out and post some pics.

I hate the Brooklynite site. There's nothing on it, the navigation bits suck, and you can't go anywhere.
That said, I really love the only pieces I can find on the site - the Basts. Seen on board they really come to life as opposed to the prints.
Feel free to sell me one.

it's a brand new gallery, that's why there's not much to see

Nice Aiko, cant wait to see the pieces in the show and good luck to a great guy called Rae.
BTW, i'm hoping to come out to NY next may so can you make sure you have a great show on in May 09. Perhaps a Faile or BAST show?

Faile? Nice...congrats on having Faile aboard. Your artist roster is coming along nicely, Brooklynite.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by Wearology on Sept 14, 2008 15:30:16 GMT 1, I went to the Aiko show last night and she is so talented. The work she had compiled for the exhibition was magnificant. The only negative was the venue was very overcrowded and Aiko only displayed 6 pieces of which 4 were already pre-sold before the show for $22,000 each. I have a lot more to say - but I don't want to publicly diss a gallery when they represent such talent like Dame Aiko. If you want the real skivvy send me a PM and I can fill you in about the nuances of the experience.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by Wearology on Sept 14, 2008 19:13:16 GMT 1, I was very surprised how many PM's I got about the Aiko show - Instead of sending PM's back to all you guys I will publicly state my observations about the show. I was extremely disappointed to see only 6 items displayed and the fact that 4 of them were already pre-sold for $22,000 each was extremely disappointing. The gallery is very small and was overcrowded plus the DJ was blasting hip hop music that a teenager would think was too loud. You had to wait on 2 lines (one outside in the heart of Brooklyn) and one inside - they were letting people in like it was a hot club in NYC you had to have a certain look - it was a cross between between Bob Marley and Bruce Lee. That's the bad news - the good news is that Aiko's work never looked better - she was there and greeted the crowd on the DJ's mic. Her work was all on extra large canvas's and they featured heavily coffee stained bunnies , playing cards , spray paint cans - she also did an olympic theme canvas with a runner raising his hands in victory - the pieces were more of collage oriented. There was a distinct Faile vibe to all 6 pieces and she wrote the word brooklyn on everything. There was no opportunity to purchase anything and Aiko was the only artists work displayed.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by hollowsphere on Sept 14, 2008 19:55:41 GMT 1, Interesting, we had a very different experience. We got there around 730pm and just walked right in. Sure the music in the back was loud but if it bothered you then you could really just go into the gallery itself where it wasn't that loud. It was crowded, but I have been to WAY more crowded things in NYC many, many times. I was also hoping for something else more affordable to me but hey, that's the breaks sometimes. My take was that the work itself was really great and as a bonus I got to see Planet Rock performed live in a backyard in Brooklyn. Nice bonus in my opinion.
