Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by edcase on Sept 15, 2008 9:59:27 GMT 1, Unfortunately I couldn't make the opening night party so I can't comment on that, but I went over to Bed Stuy the night before for the preview, and spent a fantastic couple of hours with Rae and Hope and was totally blown away by their fantastic attitude, so it's a slight shame to see people being so critical of a free party/exhibition especially given the quality of the people involved.
I guess you can't please all the people all of the time. They may have only been six pieces there, but the amount of work which had gone into each of them for a single person was clearly very significant, and they were each very different. I agree it might have been nice to have had some other smaller / more affordable works but at the same time I think it would also have minimised the impact of what was there and with this being probably the last time you'll see many of those stencils I don't think that's what Aiko was wanting to do.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by Wearology on Sept 15, 2008 12:54:36 GMT 1, I want to say for the record that the gallery representative Rae personally e-mailed me and apologized for the way things turned out over the weekend. I would also like to say that once again Aiko's work was brilliant and I agree with the post before me that Aiko's days of stencils are probably behind her. I accept their apology and once again have to remind myself it's about the art and the artist - and it's not and never will be about me.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by pfffffffffft on Sept 15, 2008 13:11:15 GMT 1, I have to tell you, Rae has a serious passion for art and is such a people person. I was away over the weekend so didnt make the preview or the event but I had quite a bit of communication with him prior to the event. He is a great guy and has already had two great shows. I am thrilled that his show went so well. I am sure if you had reached out to him prior to the event he would have made sure you had an easy entry.
He is very much about the art, and the artists but he is very much about the collectors and fans as well. At an event like that, when there is quite a bit of demand to get in, it's difficult to tell the difference between who is there for the art and who is there just to have a few drinks and be seen.
I am sorry you had a bad experience getting into the event but I can assure you, based on my own communication with Rae, had he known he would have been pleased to accommodate you.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by edcase on Sept 15, 2008 13:58:50 GMT 1, wearology - respect for coming back on the thread and saying that. A lot of people wouldn't have.
For the sake of full disclosure I should also add that last week was my first ever time in Brooklyn, and the first time I've met Rae, so I'm speaking from genuine first impressions and not defending a buddy through loyalty.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by Billy Sport on Sept 15, 2008 23:05:32 GMT 1, just to mirror what pfffffffffft said earlier, although we didnt go to the aiko show, my wife and I flew out from london to see the end of the bast show, and Rae and Hope spent nearly 3 hours with us, shooting the breeze, talking about art, and it made for a really great trip.
opening nights are always going to be busy, esp. with what had been arranged. If you're out that way, definitely drop Rae a mail and go and have a look. You cant ask to meet nicer people.

Good luck.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by edcase on Sept 16, 2008 23:14:39 GMT 1, Thanks, it was also pretty amazing coming to Bed-Stuy as much as anything!
I grew up with hip hop, graf and b-boy culture with the likes of BDP, Big Daddy Kane, MC Duke when most of my schoolmates were listening to Iron Maiden or the smiths, and although I've got much broader tastes today it was amazing to come to Brooklyn for the first time and see where so many great MC's came from. (Mind you, I can't deny I was well out of my comfort zone on a number of occasions...but I guess that's half the fun!)

All the acrylic/spray etc are directly on the wood. Looks like the eyes are paper cutouts in which he pasted and painted on top...
