DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by snakes on Sept 16, 2008 20:50:49 GMT 1, This Newsletter Thinks Itโs About Time We acknowledged Our International Readers and Offered Them Shelter Beneath Our Warm Dry Canopy of News
This one goes out to the bent and battered people of West Cuba โ who took the brunt of Hurricane Gustav. It salutes the scattered diaspora of New Orleans, the convoys heading out and the convoys heading back in, plus the Pack-a-Macโd pedestrians struggling beside the convoys, leaning 45 degrees into the headwinds. This newsletter then cruelly omits billions of other people who deserve a mention (but arenโt going to get one here because, for some reason, Mike decided to trim 723 pages off this newsletter) and finally shouts out to the lonely, ravaged, white-haired army of Frinton-on-Sea whose tea shops, manned railway crossings and defiantly narrow-minded belief systems are constantly being lashed and buffeted by the fearsome breaching waves of modernity. Yo, people. What it is!
Firstly, we would like to thank all the artists who donated their works, and everyone who came and made the Big Issue show such a great night. We raised sixty thousand pounds for the Big Issue Foundation, cleaned Asahi out of beer and not one person โ mentioning no names (Matt Small, you know who you are) โ had to be rushed to hospital wearing a makeshift tourniquet.
Our next show is Apocalypse Now, a solo show of new works by D*Face. Weโve been getting sneak previews from his studio over the last few months, and weโre not too cool to admit weโre very excited about this one. It promises to be one of the exhibitions of the year. Dates and further details will be announced later this month, including more about the preview show. So clear your diaries now. Cross everything out and just write D*Face across every page for the rest of the year. Itโs best to be safe.
Also coming up in the next couple of months is a new Nick Walker print โ details of which, will again, but measured out in small doses, like a methadone program of print news, over the next couple of weeks.
However we offered you a warm canopy of news and damnit thatโs exactly what youโre going to get. Weโre going to go beyond stylishly, sheltered, arched bare-bricked walls of Black Rat and tell you about a project our very own, now-healed, Matt Small has been involved in. Yes, we know. Most of you know Matt Small as a louche, snake-hipped lounge lizard, a raconteur and roustabout, a gadabout and gigolo to the stars. What you donโt know about him is that he has a serious side, and a moral conscience, and has been heavily involved with a London Arts Project calledโฆ
Hope in Life: an exhibition by โrealโ people
(The emphasis on real people here is important because most street artists, whatever they tell you, are not actually real people. Theyโre Transformers, Duracell Bunnies and wind-up radios โ if you cut them they bleed oil, circuitry, or spill a fluffy kind of cotton from their eviscerated anima..)
This show will take a look at how art can be used as a way of giving a creative voice to anyone and everyone. The desire to be heard and seen, to tell your story, being something we all have within us, yet only a tiny minority ever get that chance to be listened to or taken seriously by society.
โHope in Lifeโ seeks to redress that by giving a platform to non-artists working through stencils to freehand graffiti to paintings and murals. Working on a series of wooden panels the exhibition will take the form of a street based installation where these voices build up a layered expression of their identity.
To give the participants a visual presence within the show, a series of portraits have been produced by the artists, Zach Walsh, Robert Sample and Matt Small, which will be integrated into the installation itself.
Alongside the visual presence, rapper Bobby Whiskers has worked with the participants to provide a powerful rhyme and spoken word accompaniment.
This show opens Friday September 12th, 6pm here at our very own Black Rat Press Gallery.
Thatโs it for now. If weโve forgotten anything weโll come to your house and tell you personally.
All the best,
BRP

Fingers crossed there will be prints available with f**k, s**t, piss, bam, ping and wizz written on them - I do hope my mother goes to the show!

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by Ruggs on Sept 18, 2008 13:24:59 GMT 1, I'm thinking around the 75 mark. Maybe! Only because I was there for the Nick Walker show and to be honest to add another 25 bodies down Rivington Street and the tiny side street where most people queued would be extremely tight and conjested. Just thinking logically!

DFace aPOPcalypse Now Show, by samo on Sept 22, 2008 11:38:53 GMT 1, Just received a new newsletter from BRP with more information about the D*Face aPOPcalypse Now show:
This Newsletter Comes At You From a Jungle Clearing All Guns Blazing, Emerging Ripped, Blackened and Bloodied, Before Diving For Cover as a Hand Grenade Explodes Behind It Sending a (Removed) of Fire Roaring Towards Your Desktop, Singeing Your Keyboard and Setting Off Your Buildingโs Fire Alarm. (*For which Black Rat Is not legally culpable, please see our website for further details.) Yes, weโre sorry about the late running of this newsletter, but we have just had to dust ourselves off, towel down and rehang the show. And this was no mean feat. Because this is no ordinary show. This is an important show, an expansive and cavernous show. A show they tried to stop. Because at eleven minutes past nine this morning, an insurgent rebel army of Blind Italian Masters โ still carrying the psychic and retinal scars of last years Cli-Che prints โ attacked the gallery with Molotov Cocktails. Okay, regular cocktails. But still, you try doing your job with hordes of chemically blind and partially-sighted Sardinian artisans are peppering your doors with Harvey Wallbangers, Manhattens, Vodka Gimlets and Long Island Ice Teas. The alcohol fumes and distant sound of tinkling glass gets quite unsettling after a while. And whoโs going to clean up the powdery glass of a thousand highballs? Okay, Leon. But whoโs going to do a proper job and not slack off half-way through to watch Sky Sports News? Alright, Sarah. But thatโs not her job. Her job is to swish her Titian hair imperiously and wonder off with a clipboard. So you see, this has not been easy, but Dear Readers, it will be worth it. Oh yes, it will be worth it. Now read on. Here is the why. Because this show is aPOPcalypse Now (you know, thinking about it, maybe this newsletter should have come at you from the depths of the Congo, transporting ivory downriver, towards an insane and reclusive Kurtz (or Mike as we prefer to call him round here) but itโs a bit late now). aPOPcalypse Now is the new D*Face show, and itโs a special one. So special in fact that weโll be holding it at secret location which we canโt reveal until nearer the time โ when the show invites hit your inbox. Weโre really excited about this one. D*Face, has created an entirely new body of work for the show. Work that, while still recognisably D*Face, shows a marked stylistic departure. We will be releasing two prints to go with the show. The first one a seventeen colour screenprint with etched background labour of love. (Well at least it started out as a labour of love, but now the printers hate us and have joined forces with the Blind Italian Masters. Basically, theyโve rolled up their sleeves, wrapped their old school ties round their foreheadsheads and are shouting Midlands obscenties at us from the canopied safety of Cargoโs beer garden.) This print will only be available to those attending the opening night.
The second will be available online. But we are not kidding here, people, this is going to be some show. D*Face has taken time out of his busy schedule to encapsulate the showโs central message, thusly: โMy work reflects our popular culture encompassing the American dream and the ideal of good triumphing over evil, no longer relevant in today's society where the 'invade now and ask questions later' philosophy isn't tolerated or indeed wanted. Colliding cultures are no longer receptive to the American way, the Superhero's triumph of good over evil as portrayed through the political circus is now decoded through the eyes of different cultures, weary and wary of the sub-plot played in todayโs political climate where war equals brand invasionโ. Eloquent yes, but does it make any sense? It will on October 2nd, at 6pm. Invites and location details go out next week. Donโt miss it. BRP.
