Champions League Final - Man Utd v Barcelona, by Daniel Silk on May 27, 2009 22:28:07 GMT 1, Barca'a defence were pushing up the pitch even when they dint have the ball. In contrast whenever Man Utd lost the ball their defence fell back even when they were under no pressure to do so It was a tight game, but the organization of Barca's defence made the difference.

Champions League Final - Man Utd v Barcelona, by boatboy on May 27, 2009 22:29:20 GMT 1, Man U should bump up their massive debt and spend a couple of hundred million on a few world class players better than Berbatov. If they buy other teams best player's they might have a chance.

Berb is top quality, I think this will be seen after a full pre-season next year. On another day it could have gone the other way tonight, just didn't click. No major surgery needed in post season for United, a few tweaks if Ronaldo and Tevez stay, if either go then a bigger transfer may be needed (Ribery or Valencia if Ronaldo goes and a proper traditional 'number 9' if Tevez goes i.e a Mario Gomez type, not a Benzema type)

Champions League Final - Man Utd v Barcelona, by Sundowner on May 27, 2009 23:11:31 GMT 1, Man U were outclassed in every respect and they spent most of the game just watching the ball and doing nothing.
Rooney was played out of position (god knows why he was pushed onto the wing), Vidic was shockingly poor and spent most of the game in awe watching Messi and Anderson didn't win a single ball for the whole of the first half.
Bringing Berbatov (possibly the laziest player in the premiership) on is hardly going to set the game alight when owning the midfield is the key problem.

I have to totally disagree with everything you've said there mate!
They were hardly ball-watching and although they were down in posession terms, they kept pressure on the ball for most of the first half and contrary to your comment, Anderson was doing OK (not having a great game, but not the worst performer in MU's midfield) imo and it should have been Giggs and/or Park taken off for Berba (and Tevez), with Ronaldo put back on the wing where he can have more posession and a bigger impact on the game. I think there was a hint of favouritism/emotion/loyalty (call it what you will) in the 1st substitution.
Rooney is admittedly better in a central role, but he's hardly out of position on the left wing and knows and usually plays the roll very well, all be it scoring less goals. The real positional problem imo was Ronaldo up front when you have Berba (the ultimate target man and one of the world's best lone-strikers) and Tevez (the ultimate terrier) on the bench. Ronaldo was wasted up front with players like Xavi and Iniesta bossing the midfield.
Regarding Berba, you clearly need to see him play more to appreciate the intelligence and efficiency he brings to any attack. He is top top class, but he isn't the type to go chasing lost causes and needs the players around him to be on song to bring out his best qualities which focus on bringing other attacking players into the game. Barcelona were in control when he came on and imo he should have been brought on in a half time double substitution along with Tevez and Ronaldo put back on the RW where he's virtually unplayable.
All that said and done, as Mike says, the players who did play simply weren't at the races and underperformed.

Champions League Final - Man Utd v Barcelona, by idris on May 28, 2009 1:08:46 GMT 1, utd were made to look ordinary by a world class team - barca performed on the biggest stage as the script demanded - I think fergie picked up the script for last of the summer wine, had lots to offer but the multi million pound team suffered stage fright. Oh & ronaldo may be the worlds greatest player but since when did the word team have the letter i??? it's all about ronaldo, me me me -
taking nothing away from worthy champs - watching them stroke the ball around was an absolute pleasure & almost like watching the late great brazil.
Bravo bravo - roll on 09/10 season

Champions League Final - Man Utd v Barcelona, by G-Man on May 29, 2009 11:36:29 GMT 1, Got back from Rome last night what a great atmosphere there was across the city and hats off to the fans who were really good natured the whole time
What a match! Best team definately won, they controlled after the first 15 mins and MU never looked like they would win the game
Oh..... I reckon Rome is the most tagged city in Europe too, even saw a cheeky TOX06 over there
