So many good ones out there, I rather enjoyed watching "end of watch" and Richard Linklater's "before.." movies.

I'd go as far as saying it's one of the most solid and consistant trilogies out there

if you read the book, then the film is pretty good, if you didn't read the book then it may still be good :-)
Oh and being that we were the only people in the screening may mean I am somewhat alone in my view

The Best Film Ever, by Hubble Bubble on Nov 6, 2013 9:02:07 GMT 1, Anybody see 'THE CRASH REEL' on Sky Atlantic last night. Amazing documentary I thought. Centres on the rivalry between two snowboarders (not a sport I was particularly familiar with) and, in particular the aftermath of a catastrophic accident that one of them suffers. Touching, moving and brilliant. I loved it. Wouldn't be surprised to see it up for a 'Best Documentary' OSCAR.

I've recorded it, didn't hesitate after advert came on, looks very powerful.

The Best Film Ever, by Hubble Bubble on Dec 2, 2013 22:03:42 GMT 1, Went to see 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' with my teenage daughter - really enjoyed it. Intelligent film making for a younger audience (but able to be appreciated by all ages) that deals with universal issues of freedom/hope/state control and the like. Excellent special effects - but only in support of a strong story. Great escapism.

The Best Film Ever, by Hubble Bubble on Feb 19, 2014 13:23:55 GMT 1, Been at the movies a bit watching the Oscar hopefuls - some twitteresque reviews (all IMHO):
her - simple and formulaic but sticks to its guns, knows its 'world' and has a solid performance from Joaquin.
Rush - disappointing telling of the Lauda/Hunt rivalry. Ron Howard fails to deliver, even on the race sequences.
Dallas Buyers Club - Rock solid performances from McConnaughey and Leto can't disguise that DBC bites off more than it can chew and stretches itself too thin over a broad emotional canvas
American Hustle - Best of the bunch IMHO. Russell feels like Scorcese in waiting and great performances elevate a simple con tale into a period stand out. Not a masterpiece but close.
Mandela - Feels like a TV movie on steroids. Not enough budget to be epic. Average performances, average camerawork, below average make up. Disappointing.
12 Years a Slave - Undeniably moving subject matter but strangely uninvolving for me. We barely know our protagonist before he is in chains and have no way of empathising with the life he has lost. One too many plantation owners and a distracting Brad Pitt cameo put this, once again, into the 'good but not great' category
All Is Lost - Not an Oscar nom but saw it nonetheless. Redford's greatest performance in years. Lonely, touching and memorable. A man coming to terms with the (possible) end of his life whilst battling to save himself from the Ocean. Reminded me in parts of Besson's 'Le Grande Bleu'
Hobbit/Smaug - Enjoyed it more than Hobbit/Chat around the Shire but still no LOTR.
The Wolf of Wall Street - Incredibly long. Funny at first then more of the same thing for several hours. Leo on top of his game though but slouchy film-making (by his standards) from Scorcese and worryingly out-of-continuity editing from Schoonmaker.
That's where I am so farโฆ am sure you'll disagree...
