the next big thing?, by buddings on Mar 16, 2007 20:09:00 GMT 1, nahh, as i live in exeter (soon moving to bristol) its not like ive been up to london that much for gigs. ive been to the astoria twice, brixton academy once, and hackney empire the once. i think thats it.
besides, when i want a dose of sweat, exeter cavern seems to do the job nicely when its packed out. wicked venue, its where 'the good the bad the queen' played their first evr gig last year.

I've lot's of fond memories of 'the cav', the last group I saw there was The Revolutionary Dub Warriors, so must have been 8 years ago or more

Yeah first class stuff, I've got some
Gary Clail Strange Parcels African Head Charge TackHead Mark Stewart Dub Syndicate 2 Bad Card Creation Rebel
& quite a few Pay It All Back compilations
I'm ashamed to say it doesn't get played as much as it used to, a lot has been played to death about 11 or more years ago.

the next big thing?, by dotdot on Mar 16, 2007 22:37:42 GMT 1, Wouldn't be surprised if the Banksy hadn't been influenced by the On U crew. Depends on the age I suppose. It is suitably brutal as are some of Banksys images... There is a kind of visual correlation.
On the other hand perhaps not - Dont forget the beat
No Sell Out ..

Stuff from Gary Clail does ring true to Banksy's ideals
Privatise The Air " they want to privatise the air....are you gonna buy them shares..."
Two Thieves And A Liar " I bet you there are millions of people who think people who work here in the city are really good blokes, hard working, that they've got the economy of this nation deep in their hearts, what a load of old cobblers, it's the best confidence trick in history"
These Things Are Worth Fighting For "one law for the rich and another for the poor"
Decadence "decadence - where morals dont come easily"
lots of other song titles like, Behind Every Fortune..."there's a crime"
And I think On U Sound System was Bristol based.
Time wise we'd be looking at 1990 onwards.

the next big thing?, by rolyateel on Mar 19, 2007 17:05:07 GMT 1, whoever it was who said they're going to see the twang in bristol, please post your thoughts. i LOL about the simple minds comparison although i couldn't see it. i've seen worse but they're just the same ilk as kaiser's et al.
twas me...seeing them Friday at Brizzle Uni
www.myspace.com/thetwang
i think "wide awake" is their next / current offering...it's not bad...but hardly deserving of the "next big thing" title

the next big thing?, by corblimeylimey on Mar 20, 2007 14:17:16 GMT 1, Just been onto that myspace link, does remind me of a lot of the 80's bands like Simple Minds, Big Country, Echo & The Bunnymen. Not that I've got anything against those bands I've seen Echo & The Bunnymen & Simple Minds live back in the day.
Things have moved on since then though, so I'm surprised they're getting much attention.

you two still on about the twang? they're not fit to lick ian mucculoch's sh*t. simple minds and big country, i can see the similarities especially in the production.
royaltee, i went there with bad expectations and thought they weren't that bad, i'm just sick of the media giving such bands these qualifications. tell us why they're supposedly "good" and if it tickles our fancy we might look out for them.
oh, and i managed to get me a couple of tickets for the arctics at the astoria on the friday. the only gig i've got to look forward to 'til kings of leon in july. need to get out a bit more.

i'll see Friday...I'm really on the nagative side now having actally heard the song I can't see what all the hype is about...it's "OK" at best.
Well done on getting Astoria tickets!
I've got a few gigs booked up: Rumble Strips Biffy Clyro / Twang / Hadouken / Wombats The Twang (again if they're good) Cooper Temple Claus Six Nation State The Blood RAm Midlake Seasick Steve Cold War Kids Cat Power Willy Mason Roger Waters Reading Festival
was tempted to see KoL again...the new album is really growing on me...but Swindon is sold out & I'm not desperate enough to pay silly money on the bay

i hate this word but that's quite an eclectic mix of bands there and reading too. went last year but couldn't stay for the sunday, had to watch it on tv.
i was going to see milburn in southend but got to babysit so the wife is going with her brother instead. i'm sure i'll lose respect for this but i love them. yes they sound a lot like the arctics but that's like saying the beatles sound like oasis - bit of an anachronism. they've got an album they're recording just now and their doing a little tour to road test a few bits, not that i'll get to hear them.
plus the nme hate them, which makes me love them even more!

milburn are ok...not a huge fan...saw them support the artics at bristol bierkeller...then took my ex's daughter (who loves them!) to see them at bristol fleece...haven't they already had one album out?

the next big thing?, by tomhills1 on Mar 22, 2007 22:26:03 GMT 1, yeah, it was one of those that should have been put out about 18 months earlier, ashamed to say some of the demos are better than the finished album tracks. if a tune is good, never re-write it on a producer's say so (dave aringa in this case). live, they are superb, maybe not as obvious as the arctics or as frenetic but they are more diverse and any resemblance to their pals is due to them teaching the arctics how to play. the monkeys got more of a following and an album out quicker so the comparisons are always the wrong way round, but hey ho. i think the arctics are much more instant and unique, hence the quicker rise IMO. just really looking forward to seeing what milburn come up with, as the album came out in october last year and they're moving on already. perhaps shows, it should have come out a lot earlier.
