FREE Coldplay Tickets, by arcam on May 10, 2008 0:56:19 GMT 1, nightmare getting off the car park, but really enjoyed the gig They was about 20 of us and we stayed in the local Travel Inn! One of my friends had been to the Live8 concert in London....Next day went to see Oasis at Manchester and then met up with us at Bolton the following day Was it the Britannia you stayed in? If so I was there the Monday night. ;D I was also at Live 8 a few days before. It was a great weekend of music. I know some are not too keen on Coldplay and I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan but they were good live.

It's one thing to not like The Beatles, but to deny their influence on all the music that's followed, and to every bit of pop culture in the last 45 years is madness.
Some of their early lyrics were trite & simplistic - but it takes real genius to take simple words & make them resonante for so long. Some lyrics were complete bollocks, yes. But so often they hit the mark so perfectly. I can't believe you're actually comparing a band who wrote 'Something', 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 'A Day in the Life', and ABBEY FUCKING ROAD to STEPS!!! Get a grip son

The Take That / S Club / Steps of their generation... probably even more so, the Godfathers of manufactured bands and probably the most manufactured one of all. They've been given this untouchable mystique now though, you say The Beatles were toss and people jump on you like you've slated The Godfather or The Shawshank Redemption (which incidentally is also toss - Shawshank not Godfather)... lyrics either childlike or just complete bollocks are now called things like "masterful" and "genius"... utter rubbish The Kings of Toss
Mike, as somone who obviously isnt a fan of the Beatles, youre entitled to your opinion but are talking absolute s**te.
As for The Beatles being untouchable now. They were considered untouchable in their own day too. I don't think we can even imagine how famous they actually were.
As for marketing, they pretty much invented the template for music marketing, along with the importance of outstanding album covers, pop videos and music films. (all with a little help from their friends of course)
They have touched on the lives of every other band around today and pop culture as a whole. Theyre still relevant and will always continue to be..
From a city with a rich musical heritage as yours, its a shame you missed the boat.
Not a Manc v Scouse thing is it?

And to even put Oasis and the fucking Stone Roses above them, you must be joking. Especially The Stone Roses who are one of the biggest over hyped bands ever. One O.K. album and a piece of crap, and you rate them over The Beatles, ha, ha, ha! It must be a manc thing who you are just saying it for a reaction. You really can't be serious.

FREE Coldplay Tickets, by manchestermike on May 10, 2008 10:11:59 GMT 1, It's definitely not a Manc/Scouse thing. They could have come from round the corner and the sentiment would still be the same. To be fair their aren't many bands from Liverpool who I think were / are good but this is nothing to do with where they are from... Echo and The Bunnymen a notable exception.
As for The Beatles, look who else was about even at the same time, never mind since, and The Beatles don't touch them. The Stones, Hendrix, The Who, Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, The Animals, The Doors... I could go on. And without wanting to turn this into a Stones v Beatles thread listen to the Stones today next to the Beatles, 90% of The Beatles' work sounds old, staid, from another time and world; while 90% of The Stones' music from the same era still sounds strong, powerful and fresh.
If the Beatles were still about now would people still go and see them? Yes is the answer, people still go and see Cliff Richard. But much of the mystique about them is due to them no longer being here, it's not like people of all ages flocking to see true greats like the Stones all over the World wherever and whenever they play.
Of course it's an opinion, pretty much everything someone says on this board is. But in my opinion the Beatles were complete and utter unadulterated pig jisum... and it's not that "he doesn't like them so he's calling them toss", I don't like most of Elvis' music, he's definitely not toss, there was talent there. I like a fair bit of Bob Dylan's music, but as a live act he's weasel shit. The Beatles meanwhile are, were and always will be toss. A true sign of greatness is standing the test of time.
And I'm not saying this from a position of not having listened to probably almost all of the Beatles' work. My dad is a fan (my mum incidentally thinks their toss) and I've been brought up with their music at home and through a lot of friends and family. Pepper is the only passable album. YES they were musical pioneers, they basically introduced the music album as it is now and they've probably done more for music today than 99% of bands... but does that make their music any better or more worthy? No is the answer to that... musically toss

The Stones are doing the same old stuff from the beginning and never moved on or developed. I am not a big Beatles fan but one thing that I know and anyone who knows anything about popular music should agree, is that The Beatles are the most influential group ever to exist and the most innovative. To put it simply, The Beatles invented the wheel and other bands have just kept that wheel turning.

The Beatkes gave the Stones the single 'I Wanna Be Your Man', written in 10mins by Macca & Lennon and used as a throwaway B side by the Beatles. Huge single and massive career push for the Stones.
No Beatles, no Stones...simple.

I didn't want this to turn into Stones v Beatles as they're very different, so a direct comparison is difficult...
However if you insist. The Stones piss all over The Beatles from a massive height. It's not even a contest.
It doesn't matter that The Beatles gave The Stones a song or not, things like that happen all the time. How anyone can compare The Beatles pop to The Stones legendary rock is beyond me entirely.
And as I've said, yes it's personal opinion but ALL music is, and in my personal opinion the Beatles were fucking toss, 3 minute pop song, 3 minute pop song, 3 minute pop song... shame they couldn't have kept the extra member added some dance moved and they'd have been the 60s version of Five

FREE Coldplay Tickets, by Bram on May 10, 2008 14:11:49 GMT 1, The Beatles ARE untouchable. There is no other band before or since that has influenced and continues to influence the world. The lyrics and music progressed from 62 - 69 and they was always experimenting.
All the bands that MM listed that were around at the same time were also massively influenced by the Beatles. Hendrix for example bought Sgt Pepper on the morning of its release and opened his gig up the same night with a song from the album. Jagger and Richards were literally locked in a room by their manager and told not to come out until they had wrote a song like lennon and mccartney and so on.
I bet there isn't a living person (40 years on) that does not know a Beatle song. Listen to "in my life" listen to "Accross the Universe" listen to most things off the White album and then tell me they were average.
Nearly every single band since have listed the Beatles as a major influence (apart from the ones who want to be controversial or go against the grain) U2, Radiohead, The Stone Bloody Roses, Oasis, Blur, Artic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, pulp, the verve, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Franz F, Nirvana, The Chemical Bros, REM, etc etc etc.
They were also as organic as any group. Lennon met Stuart Sucliffe at art college. McCartney met at a school fate gig, Harrison went to the same school as mccartney. How that becomes a manufactured band I don't know. All Epstein did was put them in suits and taut them around the labels.
40 years on and you still can't switch on the radio, pick up a news paper or watch TV without their name, music or image being mentioned. 40 years on and when Itunes release their back catalogue they will once again dominate the charts. Will these be 60 odd year old fans buying from itunes? doubt it.
As an aside they where also a major influence on Art at the time (and still today Pure Evil, Nick Walker, Simon Caulty, Paul Insect) Warhoul wanted to court the Beatles, Peter Blake (Sgt Pepper) Klaus Voorman and many others.

As an aside they where also a major influence on Art at the time (and still today Pure Evil, Nick Walker, Simon Caulty, Paul Insect) Warhoul wanted to court the Beatles, Peter Blake (Sgt Pepper) Klaus Voorman and many others.

FREE Coldplay Tickets, by slowmo on May 10, 2008 14:13:06 GMT 1, funny thread, mike you are aware of of how velvet underground gained fame arent you? A manager, lets call him louis walsh said they had to have a female singer, lets call her Leona Lewis and they set off together on Louis Walsh's road show lets call it the x factor live.
replace walsh with warhol, leona with nico and x factor live with exploding plastic inevitable. They were manufactured, they were bloody good though.

FREE Coldplay Tickets, by manchestermike on May 10, 2008 14:27:08 GMT 1, We could sit and argue all day about this... I'm sure we'll never reach a compromise. For me they're toss, nothing is going to change my world in that respect. For you they may not be...
Just saves us going round in circles for the next 4 decades!
