Mac or PC?, by retardthebear on Jan 9, 2010 13:56:59 GMT 1, been considering getting a mac for a while but need to wait for my laptop to properly die so the mrs doesn't give me an earful.
If i was interested in a mac that just met my day to day needs (file share, iPod, internet etc etc) but also like playing online pc games eg Battlefield 2 (my secret shame!) what would you suggest as a model?
what percentage do you save on average when buying with a student discount?

Mac or PC?, by spirit on Jan 9, 2010 14:32:59 GMT 1, any newish mac will handle the everyday stuff just fine (and then some)
it's the gaming that may make you want to up the spec of the graphics card a bit - I would steer clear of anything that has the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card for gaming - so avoid the current bottom of the range iMac, avoid the mac mini, avoid the macbook, avoid the macbook air...
get either:
15-inch: 2.66GHz Macbook Pro or better 21.5-inch: 3.06GHz iMac with ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics or better Any Mac pro
Cheapest would be the iMAc at ยฃ1,225.00 from the Apple Store (you may find it cheaper elsewhere). The MacBook Pro would set you back ยฃ1,531.00

Mac or PC?, by notworthit on Jan 9, 2010 15:07:54 GMT 1, I just bought a 27" quad core imac, apple remote and a 3 year applecare contract for ยฃ1466.30 instead of ยฃ1788.01 with educational discount. Phone the educational store and just tell em you're a student, they don't ask for any confirmation
If anyone wants a G5 dual 1.8ghz, 4gb ram, 250gb + 80gb internal hard drives + 22" Apple Cinema display + Adobe CS4, Quarkxpress passport + loads of other software
ยฃ500 ono

just go to preferences -> mouse settings -> slow down the movement....hope you find it cause I'm using a swiss mac (sounds like a cheesburger deluxe ) all the best o
also checked the german sites and found information about a special mouse....unfortunately only in german, but I will try to find out more if you need so...

Only ones I know that anyone uses are the Wacom Intuos range. I use the A5 size for graphics, photoshop and FCP.
You can use the Bamboo, but it's harder to control because of the lower pixels per inch.

Thanks i was just looking at a few videos of the bamboo as seems pretty cheap, i didnt realise it would make a difference due to the pixels per inch , thanks for the heads up

Mac or PC?, by searchandrescue on Mar 20, 2012 23:01:18 GMT 1, Disclaimer
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU CAUSE YOUR iMAC OR YOURSELF BY FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS NOT ME
A few months ago I discovered a small (4mm) flaw / crack in the screen of my imac. I was gutted as I am really careful with my kit and surprise surprise the 2 year warranty provided by John Lewis didn't cover any damage to the screen. I researched replacing the screen, its only on the glass front panel, so not the led display. After a number of hours and many dead ends I found the following on the interwebb.
I was very sceptical but faced with the prospect of a ยฃ150-250GBP bill for replacement I bit the bullet. I had put aside the cost of a replacement screen so was gonna take a hit either way.
Switch off your computer and put something soft under the screen / stand. Have a flat area clear with a lint free cloth. Put your satnav sucker just below the camera. Have the apple cleaning cloth ready, made sure its clean. Start at the centre then work outwards creating a gap. Gently lift the screen from its holder and put id down gently on your flat surface. Avoid leaning over the screen as you clean it. Clean the screen and replace it. It will slot back in easily as long as your careful. Hey presto a screen like it was when it came out of the box. Plus the "crack / flaw" was gone. (Must have been some particle that got into the screen via the fan?) - Bonus! Furthermore the "grey smudge" issue that happens to most imacs has been resolved.
Double Bubble!
Again.....
