Test your internet speed, by Andy'77 on Sept 16, 2007 22:09:05 GMT 1, Normal problem if you have a live box from Orange.
Not using a Livebox, opted for a Belkin router cos the Livebox kept crapping out (technical term). May ring them in the morning.

Test your internet speed, by jmcy9999 on Sept 16, 2007 22:27:25 GMT 1, Ping is a command that records the time in milliseconds it takes for a packet to make a round trip to the server and back again. It's useful if you have a problem connecting to a server to try to ping the server (from the DOS window). The routing and size of the packet (so to speak) is configurable. The lower the ping time the better (but it is subjective as it depends on the distance to the server).
Hope that helps.

Test your internet speed, by reados on Sept 16, 2007 22:40:18 GMT 1, just had a quick look i think the fastest i can get in Cornwall is 8MB as we are a non cable area, i should be running on 8MB but this speed thing is showing 2MB, hmm.. how much difference would it make if i was hardwired in instead of wireless?

It depends on what wireless protocol you are using. If you are using b, you would not see full speed on an 8mb line - but you should see around 4mb (providing the signal is decent). If you moved up to g or n, then you would see as close to full speed as possible. You need to try speedtest hardwired first to work out whether it's the wireless network or the line itself which is causing the problem...either way, 2mb on an 8mb line is BAD! You'll never get 8mb, but you should be getting around 5-6mb with either a network cable or with Wireless-G or N
Amazingly, (well, if you're geeky, like me) in the very near future, when isps start selling 100mb+ home connections, having a Wireless-N network will be faster than having a wired network connection.

Test your internet speed, by corblimeylimey on Sept 17, 2007 13:04:02 GMT 1, As I thought my connection has gone from a 3mb in the evening to a 4mb in the day, I live in an area where a lot of students live and the pressure on the system when they're at uni lowers my speed from 4pm and throughout the weekend.
The students are never online in the morning ;D

It is ridiculous, particularly since I live within sniffing distance of Slough... supposedly the technology hub of Britain.
Unfortunately our phone is connected to an exchange about 8 miles away, so we're at the limits of receiving broadband at all. It's rubbish.
