Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by mido on Aug 7, 2006 17:16:08 GMT 1, Next tour = Tuesday 22nd August 2006 - Mini evening tour of Farringdon/Clerkenwell
Over the past 6 months or so, many people, on several forums, have responded to my leading questions and downright Miss Marple-esque annoyance of where to find a lot of this graffiti / street art. I have also discovered a lot myself, wandering the streets like a stray dog, following leads & hunches, and smelling lamp-posts.
In an effort to share this info and to let people take their own photos I have added the locations of a lot of graffiti (mainly by Banksy & Eine) to two location maps, and have also arranged a series of free tours of graffiti in London, mainly of Banksy's work. Tour 1 was in early July 2006 and visited the Shoreditch area. Tour 2 was in early August 2006 and visited Waterloo, South Bank, and Victoria Embankment.
I have been racking my brain about how to design another tour. Shoreditch and Waterloo/South Bank have great concentrations of good street art/graffiti (especially Shoreditch), and demand a full tour, but other pieces dotted around the city, which would require tubes etc. Hmm. Sounds difficult. Yet there are so many other pieces out there that people might like to see, and a decent concentration in Farringdon….
So, I’ve come up with the idea of a mini-tour of the Barbican/Farringdon/Clerkenwell area, lasting probably just over 1 hour. It can still be done by foot, and has some really iconic pieces on route.
Mini Tour 3 - Tuesday 22nd August 2006 - 6.30pm start
Meet very near Barbican Tube station (Circle, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith & City lines). I’ll work out an EXACT meeting place soon, and post up the details. We’ll leave a few minutes after 6.30pm. It will last probably just over 1 hour (slightly hard to tell).
Sorry for you people from a long way away, this one is one you might not be able to make. I don’t want to drag people all the way to London for a short tour at the weekend, so I’ve decided to try an after-work wander, before the light and weather start to fade away.
We’ll go around the Barbican / Smithfields area, then head up to Clerkenwell, Hatton Garden, and finally Farringdon Rd, ending up at the enormous Mount Pleasant sorting office. From this end point, it’s a slightly energetic walk to any tube station (Farringdon or King’s Cross are closest), or an easy bus journey. It’s a shorter walk to a pub J
Assuming they are still there by the time of the tour, it will include loads of excellent quality rats (espec in the Barbican area), the Cash Machine & Girl, and Thugs for Life (or ‘old skool’ as some know it now). Plus a couple of great Faile stencils and a London Frontline shop shutter (if the shop is closed by then….).
As before, you can obviously leave the tour whenever you want.
This mini-tour is not a very long way, and as it’s all relatively flat and doesn’t involve any non-avoidable steps I would have thought that it could be done by someone using a wheelchair or a buggy. If you were planning to use a wheelchair / buggy etc, it might be worth mentioning it to me so I can make sure I know how to get around any of the areas with steps (I'm sure they could be avoided ...).
You WON'T need a tube / bus / whatever ticket for this... It's just a bit of walking. No need to book - just turn up.
It's free, and you even get some stickers kindly donated by those nice people at Pictures on Walls (POW), and a small version of one of my photos.
If there are any problems, or you want to ask me a question please message / mail me
take care, Martin

Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by mido on Aug 18, 2006 12:36:16 GMT 1, EXACT MEETING PLACE FOR THE TOUR ON TUESDAY (22nd).... 6.30 start
At the Banksy Placard rat ('London Doesn't Work') near the corner of Chiswell Street and Lamb's Passage.
About a 5 min walk from Barbican tube station (or Liverpool St if you really want to)
When you come out of Barbican tube follow the yellow signs and yellow line that are on the pavement (marked 'Barbican Centre'). This will take you through the covered underpass (beech st). As you come out of the underpass carry on (slight kink in the road to the right) for about another 100 metres and the Banksy placard rat is straight in front of you, on a white wall outside 39/40 Chiswell St (just BEFORE the 'St Paul's Tavern' and on the other side of the raod).
If you are a wee bit late we will be passing barbican tube station at about 6.45pm, so you can probably pick us up then. Listen for people babbling about graffiti and stuff. :-)

Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by gm on Aug 23, 2006 8:09:19 GMT 1, Once again, Martin, thank you for dragging us round the streets and showing us stuff we'd never have seen otherwise. You're a star! And it was lovely seeing Sam again too, and meeting Mr & Mrs rattusamorous and everyone else whose names I can't remember. Nice turn-out, wasn't it?

Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by HowAboutNo on Aug 23, 2006 9:28:48 GMT 1, Yes Martin, as ever it was a top night, and a real difference walking round post rush hour instead of a lazeeee sundeeee afternoon. Was good to see you too again GM (and your treacle mate) and Rattus (Dave/David) and Wife (sorry, my name remembering skills are top notch as you can tell) And still impressive that Martin managed to attract people from the States AGAIN whilst only here on a short break, plus a couple of ladies from Israel! All who chanced upon our happenings from completely random Google searches!!
I was surprised we got less "strange WTF are you lot doing" looks from the trendies - maybe the people here in the week are so used to people stopping to look at painted rats that it was nothing out of the ordinary ;D
Full group shot to be posted later today when I recover! Got stuck on the bloody Misery line for half an hour in sub tropic tempratures, and ended up not making it home till gone midnight. And I was still buzzing from it all gone 2am.
But well worth it...and dare I say...ROLL ON PART 4!
BTW, genuineG - woz u there?! (sorry) and what are ATG shop shutters and dd's!! ??

Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by gm on Aug 23, 2006 10:51:48 GMT 1, Ah, that's a shame you missed it. Did you try going round to the Barbican and watching for us to go past? Not that you'd have been able to distinguish us from all the other people walking past the station at that time...
I had trouble getting home too. Jumped on a bus to Waterloo (passing another Banksy en route, just off City Road - boy painting a pink heart), only to find when I got there that there was a powercut and trains weren't stopping at Waterloo East, so I had to bus it home instead.
Eh?
I'd like to know that too.

Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by mido on Aug 23, 2006 12:13:53 GMT 1, rattus are Dave & Nicky (soon to be Dr. Nicky to me and you ;D) ....
Tal & Maya are from the banksy group on flikr. Tal was over here on holiday from Israel. maya lives here but is originally from Tel Aviv as well.
One guy (sorry - names are a weakness!) is the tenant of Robert and marco from Tour 1. what super landlords to have!!! ;D
hope the Group shot looks good.
I didn't have any particular delays but it's a long way, so it was also midnight for me. And train got packed with late middle aged people at Twickenham, as the Stones concert had just finished. I've never seen so many beer bellies and slapped up women in my life

Didn't see what was next to it as the bus went past pretty quickly. I'll make the effort to get back up there before too long and have a proper look.
Ah, right. Well I'm not giving her name out in public. Actually, I seem to remember telling him I'd PM him about something, but buggered if I can remember what it was I will give away her secret identity if my brain kicks into gear and I remember.
I think she may well pop in and say hello here at some point anyway.
Yay! ;D

Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by HowAboutNo on Aug 23, 2006 14:05:37 GMT 1, Oh bugger and f**k
My camera looked at bit iffy when I was looking at the pictures on the tube on the way home, and it would appear that all the pics I took have all currently died a death and are no more So at the moment, no group shot Sorry peeps - it was a good 'un too. 15 or 16 of us at final head count before ducking into that pub I already want to go back to.
So jimihendrixjunior, as a consequence I will be walking the route sometime again with the next week or so. Cant do this Friday, but can make it any day next week so far - so just PM me if you wanna meet up. I cant promise to be as skillfull a host as Martin, but at least I can show you the exact route we covered etc.
And the treacle mate comment GM, was just that she was a treacle!! And a top quality bird to boot. And I remember her name so neh bother there!
You were gonna PM me several things as well GM (and me to you) but I cant remember either. I was thinking we should start up a post after these meet ups where we all converse about various bits discussed on the night. Oooh - a flash of inspiration and I have remembered some of them - Jah Wobble, and then to send me a link to your mates website and thats about it. To be honest I think it was something else we were talking about by the London Frontline shop shutter (I told you I remember places by whats on the walls, not the name of the road or its geographical location - a habit picked up easily when you work in Shoreditch!)
And Rattus - What was the band you said were the best export to make it our way from the states? The gig you went to this year that was their first in 14 years and you also mentioned an album by another artist/band that was a collection of singles that was one of your favourite albums??
And then the three of you (GM/Mido aka Martin or vice versa and treacle mate) went off on a tangent and severely long list of good films, all of which I want to know about!! PM me if you remember...anyone! ;D
Oh bugger and f**k My camera looked at bit iffy when I was looking at the pictures on the tube on the way home, and it would appear that all the pics I took have all currently died a death and are no more So at the moment, no group shot Sorry peeps - it was a good 'un too. Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by gm on Aug 23, 2006 14:44:13 GMT 1, It's a shame about your memory card. I had one that suddenly died for no reason a couple of months ago and nothing I tried would get it to work again. A damn shame, cos I was planning on entering a competition with a couple of the pics I had on there, and although I've got copies saved on the PC the T&Cs say that if you are judged a winner you need to provide the original image file. So that's out
I've remembered 2 films (and ta for the reminder of the other stuff).
*heads for PMs...*

Guided Tour of Banksy Graffiti (& others) - Part 3, by gm on Aug 23, 2006 17:59:50 GMT 1, I got a few photos of the rats that I didn't already have photos of, and those 2 big faile stencils, but I didn't take any of the group. This is the only one I've got online so far tho:
However, here's an old one of the cash machine. It hasn't been changed since I took the photo:
I will attempt to get the other rats online for you later.
