It looked to me that the paint had just been removed, possibly a little retouching to the hands but not 100% sure.I'm not sure what to think about this whole restoration business but the locals were happy to see her again

I totally agree ! I can't understand why they're always trying to restore Banksy's works ! If they remain it's very good, if they get damaged, that's the rule of street art : it's bound to disappear after a day, a week, a month, a year, or sometimes more. But if some people really want This Banksy piece to be there for ever and if Banksy agrees on that, the obvious and simple thing would be to paint it again ! I know Banksy is a star now, but he's still a street artist, isn't he ? And he must have opinions about that ! I don't see why it should be that difficult to ask him to come and re-paint his own piece ! And if the piece is dead (and it obviously is, in spite of the hours some people might spend trying to clean it up), let it die ! I'm certain Banksy would prefer his maid to be nice and brand new again rather that looking a bit ridiculous after all those restorations...

Chalk Farm Maid Semi Restored, by finsburyparkranger on Feb 17, 2008 17:51:59 GMT 1, Banksy restores old pieces himself from time to time. I think its a pretty cool thing to do, especially on the pieces that have come to be loved by the local community. I would hazard a guess this was one example of a touch up that didn't go according to plan.

Chalk Farm Maid Semi Restored, by BK83 on Feb 18, 2008 2:38:11 GMT 1, I don't know how I feel about the whole restoration of illegal street work. If it was something agreed to by the owner, then I think if they want it to be restored then by all means... but if it's illegal street work, then let the wall be beautiful! I mean.... with each new work it all adds to the history. by restoring it you interfere with the natural process...
