Another New Banksy Going Up in NYC, by onemandown72 on Oct 2, 2008 21:09:09 GMT 1, can't some Brits shed light on the usage of the term "Crack?" are there more references across the pond to this word than just the name of the drug?
No Crack as in drug

Another New Banksy Going Up in NYC, by snowflake8888 on Oct 4, 2008 2:02:00 GMT 1, To me, this is the factor that suggests it is a Banksy. The ability to fund rental of a crane and amount of paint used, the image selected, the subtle historical reference that the well-read will get and the fact that it all pulls together to work as one composition. I aspire to that.

I doubt Mr B. means this type of "crack" ;D

Ha ha - Subtle Historic Reference? Its so unsubtle its naff. Not needed in my opinion. Much more interesting to be able to make your own interpretation which is pretty obvious anyway. Please don't aspire to sticking 30 foot cheap slogans on your work snow flake. Aspire to being better than that.
For me the intelligence to use spray paint to recreate pencil marks is really refreshing. Really amazing. Its great that other artists are doing it too. We all need to eat and those guys are really talented. Long live the pencil. Shame about the slogan really.

Another New Banksy Going Up in NYC, by spirit on Oct 6, 2008 9:38:29 GMT 1, I think the slogan is key to the interpretation of the piece. imo the rat complete with tie and ID card represents the banker/trader running off with his suitcase overflowing with cash and "protected" by his umbrella. The "let them eat crack" is being said by the rat and is directed towards the 8000 people who's houses are being repossessed every day and are being made homeless. Crack is used by a lot of homeless people. In other words the rat has an "I'm alright Jack, f**k you lot" attitude.
The rat is also rather overweight - so perhaps this piece could be called "Fat Rat" - a play on Fat Cat.

Another New Banksy Going Up in NYC, by max9000 on Oct 6, 2008 11:15:08 GMT 1, Yes Bongo, totally agree with you. Banksy has always been the Beatrix Potter of the street art world in my opinion, and it's exactly that same folksy, slightly twee non-threatening aesthetic that gives him so much mainstream appeal. The kind of cosy rebellion that is mild enough to still appeal to stockbrokers, and which even your granny probably wouldn't find shocking. It's the artistic equivalent of a nice cup of earl grey and a shortcake biscuit. Contracting his art out to the same people who paint ads for Nike definitely takes his brand to a whole new level though.

Another New Banksy Going Up in NYC, by max9000 on Oct 6, 2008 11:54:34 GMT 1, Yeah, both a bit harder than his usual stuff, but still hardly radical and far too obvious as usual...I think most people were already aware that knife wielding hoodies and the KKK are not a good thing. I've seen stronger imagery on an Adidas commercial. Good luck to him though.

Also sometimes difficult to see what the art is saying because of the art.
