imo art can get away with this if its very well executed, but this is not

Banksy Sid Vicious - Sothebys - 18th March, by jimbob68 on Feb 26, 2009 14:51:41 GMT 1, I would prefer the Paul Insect or Jef Aerosol piece as well. They are much better portraits and pricess!!! I think the winner will be paying at least 100k for the art history lesson that goes with it!!!

Banksy Sid Vicious - Sothebys - 18th March, by thegreatarchitect on Feb 26, 2009 16:49:39 GMT 1, wow that's really..... average Why is it average in your opinion Badrobot?.
Because its to crude wizbong, a typical example of paying for the name rather than the quality contained in the work and its success at occupying 2 dimensional space that allude to the human form. At $150,000-00 surely the Gavin Turk is far more desirable.

Banksy Sid Vicious - Sothebys - 18th March, by lee3 on Feb 26, 2009 17:06:12 GMT 1, >>>it misses the humor, or the message which makes banksy's pieces special<<<
Painting someone that self destructive and dirty with a pretty, feminine like pink background delivers a smile to my face and is full of humor as well. To my set of eyes, this is a young Banksy CLEARLY heavily influenced by Warhol using a color that nobody would relate to the subject and stenciling it repetitively 9 times over and tossing on a bit of diamond dust at the end. It is as much Warhol as it is Banksy. Yes it is a raw, crude stencil but and in many ways to my eyes it is all the better because of it.
I'm a sucker for the imperfect silkscreen pulls that Warhol often used and they usually trade at a discount to the perfect pulls showing the image exactly as it should be. I suppose one could use a similar analogy with a crude stencil or a labor intensive perfect stencil. Warhol was as much a fan of his mistakes as his celebrated works and with rare exception did he work on any individual composition for long. I suppose as a student of Warhol I've got a strong bias towards this piece though i don't believe it will hit the lower range unless Mugrabi likes the similarity too. Long winded point being, I think this has plenty of the typical Banksy humor simply channeled through a different vein than we're accustomed to.

Banksy Sid Vicious - Sothebys - 18th March, by snausages on Feb 26, 2009 17:15:47 GMT 1, Nice explanation Lee. I certainly wouldn't mind having it but think I'd still prefer something that is more typical of his work, interesting but looks more like a piece made on the way to finding his own voice rather than actually being of his own voice.

Banksy Sid Vicious - Sothebys - 18th March, by kilner on Feb 26, 2009 19:56:39 GMT 1, And- my two cents (the posting of the pics of some of bankys old pieces really reminded me of this) - early banksy work is really artless (used best possible way- in the Jane Austen sense). This Sid is no exception. He really knocked stuff out of the park on great ideas- the execution of the work is not as important in a good banksy piece.
His early stuff is casually powerful- even though it took work to think up and execute, you aren't thinking about that as much as what has just been branded to the back of your eyeballs.
Banksy is the clear top dog because of this- there are so many artists out there with great execution, but no soul.
I would much rather have one badly damaged, teeny-tiny, roughly done but powerful piece than 10 wall-sized, perfectly framed, and perfectly executed pieces with no soul.

Then Lee you would love the Kate about to go under the hammer at Dreweatts. That screen is right off. Ben must have smoked too much!

I'm not a print collector but if I understand the post in the other thread, this went for 20k GBP plus fees which is probably around 25/6k GBP with premium (which makes me wonder- why not just make a bid for the 6 from Bonham's that passed instead if you like the image?). One could probably sell 4 of them off and keep 2 for "free." The Kate image doesn't hit me on a personal level and I already have a similar image on HMP from the guy he's paying homage to anyway. Banksy tips his hat to Warhol so often and I appreciate it almost every time that it's done but it is certainly nothing I need to chase. There are countless images of Banksy's that do hit me right where it counts and I'm enjoying the pursuit of them. My love of all things Warhol is a BIG reason why I was drawn to this artist in the first place; still, it doesn't make sense that I'm not jonesing for a Kate but I'm not.

Banksy Sid Vicious - Sothebys - 18th March, by lee3 on Mar 18, 2009 16:23:32 GMT 1, Fwiw:
The subject of this thread comes up with a lot of knock out work in about 2 hours. Personally, i don't believe it sells unless the reserve is reduced drastically below the low estimate but we'll know soon enough.
browse.sothebys.com/?browsesort=lot_sort_number&cat=1&dp=Contemporary+Art&event_id=29503&g=1&hp=&hpc=&i=1&nb=1&page=3&sale_id=D09001&u1=dp
Sold for $110,500 including premium which is better than I thought but still below the low estimate. There are some gorgeous Hirst compositions and big hitters from Warhol, Richter, and Indiana all gettting bought in while other work is showing surprising strenght. Tough market to make heads of tails of.
Sale is over and the Anish Kapoor was the only big ticket item to sell. Nothing sold for over a million and not one Damien Hirst (and there were some gorgeous examples) sold. Ugh, if you were a Hirst buyer at the October acution, you bought at the zenith.
